Throwback Thursday: Let’s Talk About Some Soloists Part 2

In the first part of “Let’s Talk About Some Soloists,” we talked about some male soloists whose names are known in the K-Pop, K-R&B/K-Hip-Hop communities. Today, we will take it back and talk about some female soloists whose music either makes you bust a move, scream at the top of your lungs, or makes you feel like you are levitating.

Chungha - “Gotta Go”

On January 2, 2019, former I.O.I member and now soloist Chungha dropped her masterpiece, “Gotta Go.” It was hard to pick just one Chungha song, but I had to go with this icon. If I could go back and hear this track for the first time, I would. “Gotta Go” is that perfect mixture of pop and R&B. The moment you hear that flute in the beginning, you instantly get excited. Chungha has always been known for her singing and her dance skills. She is a talented vocalist, and those vocals can be heard throughout the song and definitely in that final chorus. That high note is one that we have cherished ever since it dropped and have all tried to recreate. For years, covers of this song have been performed. The choreography is eye-catching, intricate, and addictive. “Gotta Go” is a great song that will forever remain iconic.

Sunmi - “LALALAY”

On August 27, 2019, our quirky queen Sunmi released her bass-induced, synth-heavy dance track, “LALALAY.” Obsessed isn’t even the word to describe how much I love this song. The moment it dropped, I was hooked instantly. I found myself listening to it repeatedly and trying (key word trying) to recreate the choreography. “LALALAY” is an upbeat song that makes you want to dance the moment it starts. In classic Sunmi fashion, the song is on the quirkier side. There are moments in the song where you hear this high-pitched beat in the background, and the music video shows her in wigs and stepping out of suitcases. It is such a fun song, and I recommend for everyone to listen to it.

Taeyeon - “Some Nights”

On February 14, 2022, Girls’ Generation member and soloist Taeyeon released her full-length album, INVU - The 3rd Album. This album is jam-packed and is filled with nothing but bangers. There is one song in particular that is just so beautiful. “Some Nights” is a soulful ballad with powerful and heart-wrenching vocals. Taeyeon is a strong vocalist; in this song, you can hear the emotion behind each run and high note. Like any other ballad, there is no choreography; it is just Taeyeon gracefully singing this song with her whole chest. I am a sucker for a ballad, and this song became a favorite of mine. This is a gorgeous track that everyone needs to listen to.
