Suzy Has “Come Back” as a Singer
Actress and former miss A member Suzy made a comeback on February 17. The star, nicknamed the “nation’s first love,” returned to her solo music with the digital single “Come back.” This marked Suzy’s first solo release since 2022. Though Suzy sang songs used in the Netflix drama Doona! and the HYBE survival show R U Next? in 2023, “Come back” is uniquely hers.
A Soothing Message in “Come back”
“Come back” combines nostalgia and yearning. Suzy sings in a gentle, warm tone to provide reassurance to listeners. “Come back” tackles the emotions faced when waiting for a lover to return home. In lyrics written by Lee Inyoung (also known as soloist Chello), Suzy sings, “You could never leave / The light will shine the way.”
It appears that the lover in this song went away for personal growth: the song addresses that their partner is willing to wait until they come back from finding themselves. The song’s soft rock instrumental comes from WYOONG and Kang Hyunmin, the latter who worked with Suzy on her 2022 singles “Cape” and “Satellite.” “Come back” feels similar to “Cape,” which also focuses on providing comfort to a lover. Like “Cape,” this new song is a lovely display of Suzy’s voice. “Come back” also lasts longer than four minutes, making it more special in a time where songs often fail to reach a three-minute runtime.
The Nostalgic Visuals of “Come back”
The “Come back” music video visualizes the nostalgia and yearning from the song. This music video directed by Suzy Kang (not the singer herself, whose last name is Bae) jumps between the past and present. Suzy relaxes at home by herself, but the perspective often changes to one of a camcorder.
Presumably from the eyes of her lover, viewers see the vibrant smile on Suzy’s face as she does activities such as cooking, celebrating a birthday, and drinking wine. These memories make the two’s relationship look full of enjoyment. This contrasts to the present, framed as lonely with a monochrome filter, where Suzy must go on with life without this person. The video’s “story ver.” provides longer scenes that focus on Suzy’s portrayal of mixed emotions.
Though there’s no indication when Suzy will come back with music after this digital single, fans can anticipate more appearances on screen. Suzy will star in the Netflix series Genie, Make a Wish, set to release in late 2025. She will also appear in the movie Seven O’clock Breakfast Meeting for the Broken Heart (실연당한 사람들을 위한 일곱 시 조찬모임), slated to release in the second half of 2025.
