B-Sides: Christmas 2017 Recap

It’s officially December, which means the holiday season is in full swing! It’s time to pull out the holiday decorations, get into the jolly spirit of the season, and forget the troubles of the past year while looking forward to a fresh, new start in 2019. What better way to kick off the season than with some of the newest additions to the K-Pop Christmas track list from last holiday season?

“Joy” - NCT Dream

We’re kicking off the festivities with everyone’s favorite dongsaeng group, NCT Dream! The group joined the SM Station lineup in mid-December of last year with “Joy,” a medley of classic Christmas songs with a charming NCT twist. The song and video contain everything bright and merry, and they’re sure to add to your holiday cheer this season.

“The Carol 2.0” - LOONA

In 2016, LOONA members Heejin, Hyunjin, and Haseul released a special holiday track with “The Carol.” The following year Vivi, Cheorry, and Yves released their own special titled “The Carol 2.0,” continuing on with the special festive releases from the then pre-debut group. The three girls embody the sweet, endearing nature of the holiday season in the latter release, sharing a bright, catchy melody complemented by strong vocals. This track will definitely put a smile on your face this season.

“Lonely Christmas” - MONSTA X

It’s hard to believe that it took this long to get a special holiday single from MONSTA X, but the group certainly didn’t disappoint upon the release of “Lonely Christmas.” The song has a lovely R&B undertone throughout the melody that certainly makes it stand out, giving it its own unique flavor as it foregoes more traditional Christmas carol elements. In addition, the music video is incredibly soft, which serves as a nice change of pace from the group’s usually intense persona.

“Candy Cane” - Taeyeon

Last year, Taeyeon released a holiday album boasting many different genres, and out of the list “Candy Cane” was definitely the most upbeat. We tend to be a bit biased toward the upbeat around here, and “Candy Cane” has that cheerful tone that we can’t help but love, coupled with Taeyeon’s unbelievable vocals.

“All I Want for Christmas” - PENTAGON

PENTAGON released a special cover of famous carol “All I Want for Christmas,” gifting a super cute, endearing performance to go along with it. Jinho’s vocals are out of this world in the beginning; his English is so on point that he puts just about every other artist to shame. It’s pretty impressive to hear the boys sing fully in English, and the cover is just so adorable and dorky that we can’t help but fall in love with every one of them.
