For Jonghyun - Remembering you, always.

In celebration of their 10th year anniversary, SHINee has made their highly anticipated comeback with The Story of Light EP.1. This is the first installment of three albums that SHINee is slated to release this year. Although Jonghyun is no longer with us, his presence is surely still felt and remembered throughout the album and music video. The Story of Light EP. 1 takes on the theme of rebirth and nature which is accentuated through their album and music video for “Good Evening.”

Tracklist:

  1. All Day All Night

  2. Good Evening

  3. Undercover

  4. JUMP

  5. You & I

1. All Day All Night

SHINee kicks off their album with “All Day All Night” which is a fast-paced, EDM/R&B-influenced track that fans, new and old, will be up and dancing along to. It comes as no surprise that SHINee would start off with a bang, immediately throwing you into a journey of music. “All Day All Night” is the type of track to put on during a house party or going out for a cruise at night with a bunch of friends. This is only the first summer-type track from this album and, if this is just the beginning of the album, there is much more that fans are going to be blown away by.

Title Track: Good Evening

If you were a big fan of “View” from their previously released album, “Good Evening” is the upgraded version of it. “Good Evening” starts off rather slow but builds up to this catchy and chill song that you can’t help either bob your head along to or bust out into a dance. Once again, SHINee vocally dominates with their title track. Sometimes there are times where the music can overpower the vocals of a group, but that is not the case for SHINee. Their vocal powers effortlessly shine through as well as their great synchronization for their dancing.

The music video for “Good Evening,” true to SM Entertainment style, takes on an artsy, nature-esque approach. Throughout the music video, there were several sets where the SHINee members were surrounded by nature or plants which added to this refreshing take to the music video. In terms of the theme of rebirth, fans can interpret the SHINee members coming out from the plastic cover or diving into the water as a symbol for starting a new chapter/journey with each other. The biggest highlight of the music video would have to be the accents of their pearl-aqua fandom color. It served as the biggest nod not only to their fandom, but to Jonghyun as well.

3. Undercover

As this particular album was released during the summer time, it’s no doubt that SHINee would have another upbeat dance track. While “Undercover” starts off rather fast-paced, it slows down to an R&B-EDM break that is so sleek and smooth, you can already imagine what kind of choreography the SHINee members might pair with this song. “Undercover” has a sexy vibe and ring to it, showing their growth from boys to men over their 10-year career. “Undercover” doesn’t disappoint and is another solid track from the EP.

4. JUMP

“JUMP” is the type of track that you will hear playing on the runway during Fashion Week. It is a mid-tempo EDM/dance track with SHINee’s signature sound that will once again have fans up on their feet and dancing. If not, it’s definitely a song to play while hanging out with friends and having a good time together. “JUMP” is another easy-going track that many will enjoy.

5. You & I

Closing out the album, it is simply not a SHINee album without a ballad. “You & I” slows the album down, calming down from the high-energy dance album. “You & I” will leave you breathless at this beautiful song. This song can also be interpreted as a song meant for Shawols as it is SHINee’s 10th anniversary. If you need a song to wind down after a long day, “You & I” is the perfect song for you.

Once again, SHINee delivers a great album worth the listen. You can definitely hear where Jonghyun would fit into the album. There are moments where the members do a phenomenal job of hitting notes just like Jonghyun that it makes it seem as if he were there himself, still singing along with the rest of the members. As this is the first installment for their The Story of Light series, there is much excitement as to what the next upcoming albums have in store. If you haven’t listened to this album just yet, it is highly recommended!
