Time for the Moon Night with GFRIEND
GFRIEND is finally back on the K-Pop music scene after a seven month break since the release of repackaged album Rainbow. The girls have returned this time with a slightly more haunting concept in “Time for the Moon Night” than previous releases, “Love Whisper” and “Summer Rain.”
If there is one thing we can count on GFRIEND for, it’s consistency. Whether that be in concepts, musical style, or stunning choreography, the group definitely has an M.O. that they tend to stick to, and “Time for the Moon Night” is no exception to that rule. Despite a slightly darker concept than we’re used to, this release is still a tried and true GFRIEND release.
The Music Video
Potentially the most interesting difference in this release is the overall melancholy that is present throughout the music video. Some portions of the video are very reminiscent of BTS’s “Run,” with a focus on the friendship of the members healing the loneliness and pain of each individual. However, the underlying sadness is amplified more at the end as it is revealed that member Eunha is all alone and the other girls appeared to be a figment of her imagination.
Unlike previous releases that don’t always hold such a heavy storyline over the song, “Time for the Moon Night” is just different enough to be interesting while still delivering that guaranteed GFRIEND sound. As is always the case with releases from this girl group, the choreography is both stunning and unique and performed flawlessly, a trait the group has definitely become known for since making it big.
The Album
Time for the Moon Night has a rather static and cohesive sound to it overall, with GFRIEND’s signature musical elements sprinkled throughout each song. Whether or not this is a positive or negative thing comes down to personal taste. However, there’s no doubting that GFRIEND is a powerhouse when it comes to vocal prowess.
My two favorite B-sides on the album were “Tik Tik” and “You are my Star.” “Tik Tik” has a bit more of a bouncy dance beat to it that makes it catchier than the other tracks, while “You are my Star” is much more mellow but just as sweet. If a fan of GFRIEND’s signature soft and sweet sound, this album will definitely be enjoyable for you. However, if you’re more into the heavier and daring sound by the likes of EXID or BLACKPINK, Time for the Moon Night may not be the album for you. All biases aside, however, there’s no doubt that GFRIEND has once again showcased their many talents in this newest release.
