Weekly Charts: June 4 - June 10
Summer has only just begun and so have the summer comebacks that are heating up the charts. Before the competition rises for the best summer jam, this week’s music charts on MelOn, Mnet, Gaon, and Bugs! showcase the various musical colors of summer.
Summer Kickoffs
Wanna One kicks off the sizzling season with the release of their third EP, 1÷x=1 (Undivided), on June 4 with their electro-pop track, “Light,” which is currently dominating the top 10 spot on all music streaming sites. In addition, this special album includes sub-unit tracks produced by famous artists such as Dynamic Duo, HEIZE, NELL, and ZICO, and introduces the group members’ versatility in music styles that easily fall within the Top 20 of Instiz ichart. Their fresh songs as a group and units are highly anticipated for their upcoming world tour this summer.
AOA returns after a year-long hiatus from their last comeback without Choa and prove themselves to still be as powerful as before as they wrap up in the Top 5 of music charts (Number two on Bugs!) with their bubbly pop song, “Bingle Bangle.” If the vivid graphics of cute pixel characters and popping colors that capture the essence of summer in the music video did not grab your attention at first, then the funky tune will have you whistling along and “shaking your booty” all summer long with these gals.
Chart Dominators
The cute and youthful duo Bolbbalgan4 achieved an all-kill on the charts Bugs!, Gaon, and MelOn for three weeks straight with their cheery folk song, “Travel,” that may inspire listeners to venture freely around the world this summer. Other tracks from Red Diary Page.2, “Wind” and “Starlight,” have had their fair share in the Top 20 spots of music charts during in past few weeks.
Following BOL4 on the MelOn and Gaon weekly charts is supergroup BTS with “Fake Love.” The group’s increasing success and popularity had fans across the globe anticipating the second installment of the Love Yourself series that has charted not only domestically but globally as well with ranks on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200. After three weeks and still holding strong, this emotional hip-hop and alternative hybrid mix may be the unexpected song of the summer.
Timeless Hits
Some early releases this year still reign in the Top 10 of Korean music charts that diversify the sounds of summer. April releases like TWICE’s addictive sugar pop “What is Love?” and LOCO and Hwasa’s sultry R&B tack “Don’t Give it to Me” have a strong grip on the charts during their seasonal transition. However, the undefeated title goes to iKON’s upbeat heartbreak song, “Love Scenario,” that showcases a more mature sound from the group. Despite the song deviating from their usual hip-hop style, listeners cannot get enough of this love song that has been consistently in the Top 10 of music charts for five months.
This week’s charts showcase only the beginning of summer releases with countless possibilities for this year’s K-Pop summer anthem. From R&B, to pop, to alternative, to folk, listeners can find any song that suits all their summer adventures.
