Dressing to Express at KCON NY

Every year when preparing for KCON, the one question I ask myself is: what the heck do I wanna wear? A decision seemingly simple, but something I fuss over every year. KCON NY offers KCONers the opportunity to show up and show out.

This year, the concert lineup inspired a series of outfits from streetwear to school uniforms all the way to full-out cosplays of costumes worn by their favorite idols. Each outfit was inspired by their favorites, and each person put their own twist on them. For example, the K-Pop cover dance team K had an awesome “Cherry Bomb” inspired costume.

The first picture is a lovely Universe who goes by @Adachicuto on Instagram. I had the pleasure of chatting with her at the UNIVERSE fanmeeting. Her outfit was inspired from all the pictures of PENTAGON member E-Dawn. She also was influenced by several trends happening in K-Fashion including the increased use of platform shoes. She also was carrying around a Kermit doll for good measure. Her outfit was something I could find myself wearing on a daily basis, the perfect balance of comfort and style.

These ladies drew my eye immediately due to their grunge street style. When speaking with them, they mentioned the heavy influence of street style seen in K-Idol stages and engagements. Out of the three I found myself drawn to @joce_kibkib and her choice of layering. I could see myself in this outfit, changing the layers to bring the edgy style from day to night.

@Vic.llama on instagram describes this look as Red Velvet chic. Her main inspiration comes from one of their latest tracks, “Bad Boy.” All I could think about when looking at her outfit is that I wish I could pull off those red pants as well as she can.

Each year at KCON the looks change with the lineup, and it is always such a treat to see how fellow Hallyu fans rock their looks. Now if only I can remember to always pack sunscreen…
