Language is no longer a barrier when it comes to music. Music is a universal factor that provides new opportunities, creates new connections, and gives a new insight on different genres. JTBC’s variety show Begin Again, aiming to display the true impact of music by busking in a foreign country, aired the first season from June 25, 2017 to September 10, 2017 and the second season this year from March 30 to June 29. Being able to see the influence of music in different parts of the world was an amazing experience that produced a variety of emotions throughout the show; from an awe-striking moment to a comforting atmosphere, the cast of the Begin Again series made unforgettable memories for their audience.
Begin Again: The First Chapter
Lee Sora, Yoon Dohyun, You Heeyeol, and Noh Hongcheol were first up as the cast of Begin Again. Although an unexpected combination, the four celebrities showed off their flawless collaboration throughout the episodes.
Lee Sora is one of Korea’s top female ballad singers. Known for her unique singing style, the artist’s voice is certainly one of a kind. Yoon Dohyun, leader of the band YB, is famous for his songs that suit his rock vocals. You Heeyeol’s ability as a musician and songwriter was undoubtedly emphasized throughout the busking sessions as alterations to songs and instrumentals were necessities. Despite his lack of musical experience compared to everyone else, Noh Hongcheol contributed an outstanding effort to the team.
Traveling to Ireland, England, Switzerland, and finally France, the four members made up the group Begin Us. Holding busking sessions in random locations, they challenged themselves to break out from their shells and share their talent with everyone who stopped by to appreciate the beauty of music. With this, the first season of Begin Again was over, but the busking trip had yet to end.
Begin Again: The Second Chapter
Kim Yoona, Lee Sunkyu, Roy Kim, and Yoon Gun started off the first half of the second season. Kim Yoona and Lee Sunkyu, both in the rock band Jaurim, showed their chemistry they’ve built throughout the years. Kim Yoona’s power vocals as well as Lee Sunkyu’s dynamic skills as a guitarist played a role in developing a more diverse sound. Roy Kim’s mellow voice immediately grabbed the attention of people as Yoon Gun’s piano melodies and soft vocals added a comforting effect to the song.
On the last day of their busking trip, solo artist Jeong Sewoon joined in the team. Although a rookie, his soothing voice was indeed eye-catching, signaling his potential growth in the future.
Park Junghyun, AKMU’s Lee Suhyun, Hareem, and Henry’s group concluded to the second season of Begin Again. Park Junghyun, known as the nation’s “fairy,” shook the hearts of many with the contrast between her petite figure and her powerful yet delicate voice. Lee Suhyun’s sweet voice was a great match to the team; often lifting up the atmosphere and sometimes having a healing effect, the artist was able to convey a wide range of emotions with the audience. Hareem, a musician of a distinct style, demonstrated his incredible ability to play an instrument, sing, and layer harmonies at once. The artist’s calming tone struck the emotional side within the audience. Henry, also a musician full of striking qualities, showed off his skills as a vocal, violinist, and pianist. Not afraid to stage his endless abilities, the artist established a new perspective of him with the viewers.
The delightful combination of all the vocals and instruments was indeed legendary. The effect they brought upon the audience was impressive; through this, we can really recognize that music is a language that connects people all over the world.
Thanks to all the musicians, every busking session was filled with pleasurable melodies of instruments and voices.
