Weekly Charts: January 3 - January 9
At the second week of January, artists continue to ring in the new year with a bang with explosive releases. Whether it be refreshing tracks that showcase an artist’s new image, songs with painful but honest lyrics, or dance tunes with empowering messages, this week’s charting artists open with a powerful start to this year in music.
WOUNDS OF THE HEART
M.C. the MAX expresses the painful aftermath of leaving a cherished relationship with “After You’ve Gone” released on January 2 from their Circular album. In their latest ballad track, the band shares the raw emotion of heartache, trying to suppress waned feelings and faded memories that still keep the heart overflowing with tears. Reopening the sharp scar on the heart left by the past only deepens the wound past the point of healing. Currently number one from charts like MelOn to Soribada, M.C. the Max opens up on unceasing pain of heartbreak during the healing process.
MIDNIGHT MADNESS
Chungha returns to the new year with a darker image in “Gotta Go,” released on January 2. Her latest single deviates from her usual cheery and summery tropical tracks with a dark and modern spin on a classic fairytale. Like Cinderella, the enamored singer feels ready to pour her honest emotions to her lover and elevate their love, yet still feels restrained as the timing to reveal her true thoughts feels off when the clock strikes 12. Topping Mnet at number one and number two on Genie, Chungha rings in the new year at midnight with a new image and new chances at love.
SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT MAN
Apink searches for the perfect man with “%% (Eung Eung),” released on January 7 from their PERCENT EP. The seven ladies make it clear that although they are seeking a new lover, they need a man who is up to par with their demands and as flawless as the ladies themselves. This synth-rich, ‘80s-inspired track creates an addictive anthem of finding love without having to compromise and an intriguing, fantastical music video of the members assembling their ideal man in their own magic factory. Placed at the number three spot on Bugs!, listeners will be saying “eung eung” to Apink’s wishes.
