HEIZE Rings in Fall With Late Autumn
Korean R&B songstress HEIZE is back with a new mini-album filled with a myriad of wistful songs perfect for the chilly months of autumn. Released on October 13 and featuring collabs with notable K-R&B artists such as Crush and Colde, Late Autumn boasts yet another chapter of musical exploration for HEIZE.
The album opens with its title track, “Falling Leaves are Beautiful,” a romantic song about love set against a sorrowful lo-fi beat. As with most HEIZE releases, the song has a vintage touch to it, though this time it’s through the fluid strings that weave in and out of the song. In the way that autumn itself is a little bit sad and yet the start of a new beginning, “Falling Leaves are Beautiful” is just as hopeful as it is melancholy. As a title track, it’s not one of HEIZE’s strongest, though you’ll be hard-pressed to find a song more suited for the season.
“Late Autumn,” the second track on the album, is a deceitfully upbeat breakup song featuring Crush. “Late Autumn” paints the sad story of a failing relationship where one person realizes the other is in love with someone else—a perfect fit for a duet with R&B ballad king Crush. Despite its mournful story the song is relatively lighthearted for a HEIZE track, sounding like something from a drama OST. The next track, “Diary,” is much more on brand for HEIZE in its slightly groovy portrayal of accepting heartbreak. In the song, HEIZE sings of erasing memories with a lost lover but the track takes a turn at the very end with an unexpected key change and her admittance that her diary is full.
“DAUM” is a musical curveball on Late Autumn with its playful rhythms, cheeky lyrics, and bright xylophone line. In an interview on Midnight Radio with Ha Sungwoon, HEIZE admitted the title is actually not related to the well-known Korean web portal but instead refers its literal translation “next.” On top of its tinkling percussion, “DAUM” has an air of whimsicality to it in its depiction of the rose-colored glasses of new love. The song marks HEIZE’s second collab with R&B singer-songwriter Colde, following their duet “So, it ends?” off her album She’s Fine from earlier this year. In an album full of heavy-hearted songs and muted melodies, “DAUM” is a much needed breath of fresh air much like an unexpected sunny day in the dead of fall.
“Being Freezed,” a track co-produced by Giriboy, brings the heartbreak back tenfold in its tale of the final stages of a relationship. The lyrics are particularly painful, with HEIZE equating the pain of a breakup to being frozen. For anyone that’s been through a breakup, romantic or otherwise, HEIZE does a beautiful job turning such a relatable feeling into music. The album closes with “missed call,” a track that HEIZE admitted signaled the transition into winter. Opening with a busy phone signal, “missed call” is an instrumental outro made up of layers of morose strings and soft piano that build until they fade into the muffled sound of rain.
With its crestfallen songs about fading love and its equally hopeful messages about how love can bloom again, Late Autumn is a flawless soundtrack for anyone’s fall season.
