Curl Up in Comfort with SLCHLD

We’re right smack in the middle of the holiday season, and things can get hectic for some during the season of cheer. Perhaps it is too many responsibilities, too much pressure to socialize, too many events to attend, or not enough time to recuperate. On days like that, SLCHLD is here to provide the warmth and comfort of a quiet night by the fire.

Unless you’re big into the indie scene, you’re probably not familiar with SLCHLD. Very few details have been publicly released about the musician, but we can start with the basics. A Vancouver native who returned to his birthplace of Seoul, Jang Doohyuk prides himself on being a purely independent artist, with no ties to major music labels or big-name artists. The majority of his music has been posted on Soundcloud since his beginnings in 2017, but you can also find his discography on Spotify and other major streaming outlets. His artistic side really shines through in the cohesive nature of his album covers, all of them featuring a particular unique artistic style. You will often find him collaborating alongside fellow indie artists like oceanfromtheblue, whoosh, and Rheehab

Most of his songs are either mostly in English or a mix of English and Korean. The tried-and-true indie artist has a more R&B genre focus, with most of his music providing a much needed lo-fi fix for late nights and quiet evenings.

More than anything, SLCHLD lets his music speak for himself. Just perusing his Spotify homepage, you will be surprised by the number of releases he’s got to his name, especially given that he’s only been active for two years. His latest release was merely a week ago on Soundcloud, titled “don’t look for me.” SLCHLD’s soothing vocals are accompanied by a brighter acoustic melody, hiding the more somber, bluesy lyrics of the track. “don’t look for me” is a track that is a great introduction to SLCHLD, so be sure to check it out here!

His latest EP my insecurities, not yours is a four-track mini-album that opens up with the somber and soft “because I don’t wanna know,” setting the tone for a lo-fi experience you won’t soon forget. I find myself dreaming of late nights up working with this type of track playing in the background, a small comfort in the silence. One of his more popular releases, “she likes spring, I prefer winter” follows, offering a more upbeat melody with a sweet sentiment. “My insecurities, not yours” is a personal favorite, a more waltz and ballad influenced track that offers a new, addicting tempo to add to the mix. The final song, “twenty four hours,” offers a bit of a nostalgic feeling in the scratchy and far-away melodic elements, eliciting a feeling of the world being far in the distance.

SLCHLD’s music often feels like a warm and comforting hug, the type of music that helps soothe the difficulties of a normally hectic daily life. He may not employ the type of melodic elements we as K-Pop fans are used to in his music, but he provides a much needed break from the overly loud and intense popular music that we are often bombarded with. If you’re looking for an artist who feels like the comfort of home, look no further.
