B-Sides: Confidence is Key

You know that feeling when you wake up on the right side of the bed and you feel ready to conquer the day? Well, this week in B-Sides, we will explore some confident tracks that make you want to strut your stuff on a catwalk.

“Moonwalker” - SEVENTEEN

From their album “You Make My Day,” SEVENTEEN’s performance unit of Dino,The8, Hoshi, and Jun came out with this absolutely cheerful track. With the steady bass and rifting synth, it sounds like a song straight from the catwalk. The title of the track itself is a play on words; it makes you think of the moonwalk dance, as well as their romantic image of walking on the moon with their loved one. What stands out about the song is how each member playfully changes the rhythm of their lines to contrast against the consistent beat of the chorus. Overall, the song gives you the urge to dance, but it’s also the perfect pump-up song to get you walking confidently into your early morning meeting.

“Senses” - JUS2

JUS2 is GOT7’s newest sub-unit with the leader JB and maknae Yugyeom, with this B-side released in their debut mini-album FOCUS. Just as the title of the song indicates, it truly is a sensual experience. One word to describe the song is “suave,” as the smooth synth and their soft voices give off a cool confidence. The pulsing clap-beat against their slightly muted whispered phrases scattered throughout the song creates a chic atmosphere that is hard to ignore. This is the kind of song you would hear in a high-end clothing store—it makes you feel good and powerful in your own way.

“Girls Like Us” - TWICE

Moving on to the ladies, TWICE’s most recent album FANCY YOU gave us this empowering song that you can’t help but jam out to for days. British singer-songwriter Charlie XCX helped write and produce the song, and she really made TWICE shine. With the steady beat, light repeated piano chords, and falsetto ad-libs, the song brings out nothing short of happiness. Even the line distribution between the members is pretty balanced, and the empowering lyrics can make anyone feel good about themselves. The part of the song that stands out is the chorus—it is simple, but it exudes an engaging confidence. The song makes you feel proud of your strengths and makes you want to put on your favorite outfit and just hang out with your friends. TWICE shows that a little confidence in yourself can go a long way.

“Moon” - EVERGLOW

Returning to the moon theme, rookie group EVERGLOW came out with this song on their debut album Arrival of EVERGLOW. The leader E:U co-wrote the song, and she expresses the importance of having confidence in a relationship. The song asks the romantic partner to be honest like the back of the moon, with an addicting beat that slows down to a smooth synth. The group also plays around with syncopated rhythms to go along with their strong, yet soft vocals. There is a balanced line distribution and crisp harmonies that make you forget that EVERGLOW is a rookie group. The song emits a young-and-hungry confidence which shows you that EVERGLOW will stride into the K-Pop world without looking back.
