Woosung Likes Your “Face” in New MV

In his solo debut, The Rose’s leader Woosung brings us a groovy flavor at the height of the summer with his first music video “Face.” “Face” is the title track for his first solo album titled Wolf.

The Music Video

This music video is simple, yet aesthetically pleasing. The first thing to notice is the use of the color orange throughout the majority of the music video. The set is orange, the lighting is orange-tinted, and Woosung himself is dressed in orange. In color psychology, orange symbolizes energy, being uninhibited, and vitality; orange means breaking out of the box your image forces you into. This is part of the message that Woosung wanted to portray in his music video. Another thing is the deliberate choice to veer away from traditional Korean beauty standards. Four unique faces appear in this music video that show dramatically different images that many are used to. Youngrong Kim—better known as NANA—is a South Korean drag queen, Bang Wu-ri or Daisy Bang is a plus-size model, Lee Minju is a DJ, and Song Hakyun is a model. When the video isn't painted in shades of orange, Woosung is dressed in dark colors in a dark room where the only light barely shines on him, revealing an almost crazed look on his face. A cool image that is also included in the video is Woosung’s silhouette lit by the moon. The silhouette shows him howling at the moon, playing into the overall theme of his first album. While the video overall is simplistic, there is some suggestive imagery with everyday objects, similar to how objects are used in EXID’s video for “Up and Down.”

The Song

The song can be summed up in one word—groovy. The melody is comprised mostly of electric guitar and snappy percussion, with the chorus bringing an interesting false drop. Overall, the lyrical composition is simple but sticks in the listener's ear. Woosung’s vocals are breathy and sultry as they bounce across the song. On The Rose’s official YouTube channel, the video has English captions that help the viewer interpret the meaning of the video. Without turning the captions on, it’s easy to get the hook “I like your face” stuck in your head, followed by “I like your taste.” One thing to notice musically is that Woosung tucked a wolf’s howl into the song. This is also true for the rest of the album; it's a fun easter egg for listeners to find.

No matter how many times you listen to the song, it is bound to get stuck in your head. Check out the music video for “Face” on The Rose’s YouTube channel.
