Throwback Thursday: Indie Coffee Shop

Life can be stressful for the average K-Pop fan. With comebacks around every corner and an infinitely draining back account, sometimes it’s best to just take a step back and relax. On days when life’s little troubles knock you down and you need to unwind, kick back in your favorite coffee shop, order your favorite latte, and chill with this coffee-themed K-Indie playlist.

“Under Caffeine” - Stella Jang

Singer-songwriter Stella Jang released her song “Under Caffeine” as a digital single in 2018. The song has a relaxing, hypnotic quality to it—fitting for a song of this title. Stella’s soft rap in the second verse adds an unexpected layer of spunk to the otherwise chill track. But what makes this song even better are its sardonic lyrics: “Under Caffeine” is literally about the need one—particularly those prone to procrastination—has for coffee in today’s fast-paced society.

“Brunch” - Gain and Hyungwoo

In 2013, Gain from Brown Eyed Girls paired with Birth of a Star Season 1’s Cho Hyungwoo to release a joint album titled Romantic Spring. “Brunch,” the lead single off the album, is a bright acoustic track about simply getting brunch with the person you love. Few things in life are as relaxing as enjoying a late breakfast with someone you care about, and Gain’s and Hyungwoo’s soft harmonies make for the perfect backing track. Check out the music video for “Brunch” and see how long you can go without slipping into a rose-colored daydream.

“Affogato” - Domingo, OoOo

In 2018, Domingo and OoOo paired with Kozypop to release “Affogato,” a jazzy lo-fi track about a love confession. With syncopated piano layered over relaxed electronic beats, “Affogato” will slow down even the frenziest of days. Rather than an artist, Kozypop, a portmanteau of “cozy” and “K-Pop,” is the brainchild of producer A June of Link6. The project seeks to bring indie artists to light, partnering with them to release a wide expanse of tracks more accessible to the general public.

“Iced Coffee” - Ben

Released as a single off her 2018 studio album Recipe, Ben’s “Iced Coffee” is a light and groovy pop track that compares a lover to a cup of iced coffee. The song opens with the ambient sounds of a cozy cafe set against a simple electric guitar before breaking into Ben’s soft vocals. Whereas a regular hot cup of coffee is warm and comforting, a glass of iced coffee is refreshing, much in the same way that new love can be.

“Sweet Kiss Like Coffee” - Eddy Kim feat. Lee Sungkyung

Eddy Kim’s 2016 song featuring actress Lee Sungkyung is a bit more subdued than the others on this list. Though the song itself sounds just as comforting as your favorite coffee shop, “Sweet Kiss Like Coffee” sings of a failed relationship in which the singer wishes for his loved one to move on happily, even though he wishes to remain on her lips like the last taste of a cup of coffee. Lee Sungkyung’s voice is the perfect contrast to Eddy’s, and her soft intro in the third verse makes this heartbroken song that much more homely.
