If you follow the K-Pop world on social media, you’ll see a lot of people that often gripe about the lack of girl groups that focus on harder, more hip-hop styles in their comebacks. Yet when one appears, they often don’t get as much press as traditional girl groups, leaving them to fall to the wayside in a sea of oversaturated media. It could be argued that this is the case for 3YE, a newly blooming girl group that has nothing but hip-hop swag.

“OOMM (Out Of My Mind)”

It hasn’t been that long since 3YE made their debut onto the scene back in May. Their debut single, “DMT (Do Ma Thang), has only racked up about 462,000 views so far, not much when it comes to the world of viral K-Pop. But “OOMM (Out Of My Mind)” has already gotten close to that record, just two days after release. 

The song begins with a heavy horn section, giving a glimpse into the intensity of the track going forward. As expected, the first verse delves into a heavy rap vibe, the second follows along that line until things grow lighter at the bridge. What’s really catchy about this track is the unexpected bolero that comes between the bridge and climax of the chorus, adding an element of EDM into the otherwise heavily hip-hop influenced track. If you like your hip-hop with some flair, “OOMM (Out Of My Mind)” is right up your alley. 

If you’re a veteran fan of K-Pop, you may be able to tell that the videography used in this music video is a bit more amateur than some other tracks you’ve come across. Is that a negative for the release? In my opinion, no. It just presents a different composition that still has weight and can still be considered noteworthy. The bad girl concept is extremely apparent, with the setting of the music video being a female prison. The only release I can recall that even touched on this type of concept is Ailee’s “Mind Your Own Business,” which definitely didn’t focus much on the prison aspect of the video. It drives home the point that 3YE is here to make a different impression when it comes to girl groups, wanting to give a harder and more intense impression than their counterparts.

As a female fan that prefers harder, more girl-crush-inclined concepts, I’m intrigued by what 3YE has to bring to the table. I find it rather curious that so many people scream for this kind of girl group concept, yet completely ignore it once it comes to light. 3YE is still very new to the scene, but I’m excited to see what direction they end up going as they move forward in their career.
