Dive into Graphy
One major difference between the traditional K-Pop industry and the indie world is how available the artists are to the public. Unlike idols, many indie artists are particularly aloof with their identities, instead choosing to let their music speak for them. Some may argue this is a purer form of art, since we are less likely to get distracted by visuals and focus more on the music and its message. Graphy is a band that definitely falls into this category. If you get curious and decide to google this indie band, you’re likely to come up with very few results. But after a little bit of digging, you’ll quickly find yourself immersed in their music.
What we can glean from the available information is that this band came to life back in 2017 with single album The Calling, featuring two tracks, “The Calling” and “Little Monster.” The group has a very early 2000s Alternative Rock vibe to them, reminding the listener of groups like Radiohead or Switchfoot. The group sometimes also ventures into a more retro rock sound (such as in single “Alcohol”), which is reminiscent of ‘60s bands like Cream.
Though of Korean origin, the songs are written entirely in English. Most of what they post on their own YouTube channel are live in-studio recordings of their songs, and unlike mainstream Korean music, they release at a much slower rate, not unlike the American music industry. So far, the group has five single albums published.
At the beginning of their career, the group did not even have music videos to go along with their singles, but instead simply uploaded their music to YouTube with album art. First release “The Calling” holds a certain charm for its softer sound and mellow rock nature.
The latest release from the band shows the progress they’ve been making, however. In May of 2019, they released their first music video for “Wish You Were Here,” a track that also has a heavier emphasis on the harder rock side of things, with a touch of the angst we all know and love that comes with most rock-focused music.
With such a short duration on the scene and only a handful of releases out so far, there’s still plenty to learn about this budding indie band. But if you’re a fan of alternative rock and are looking to support more indie artists, you won’t be disappointed with what Graphy has to offer.
