Throwback Thursday: Eighties’ Energy

As we head into the final months of 2020, retro concepts are still all the rage. While most groups have taken the disco route, the 1980s have also had their share of influence, especially in years past. Bridging the gap between disco and the technological age with an influx of synthesizers, let’s take a look back at some of our past favorites with ‘80s flavor!

“Fingertip” - GFRIEND

“Fingertip” comes off of GFRIEND’s 2017 mini-album The Awakening and sets the girls’ impressive vocals against funky synths and guitars. Compared to earlier releases from the group, “Fingertip” is incredibly bright and upbeat, driven by a mix of bass, strings, and metallic synths that are characteristic of the late 1980s.

“So Hot” - Wonder Girls

Known as the queens of retro, it’d be a travesty to not include Wonder Girls on this list. Their 2008 single “So Hot” propelled the group to a new level of stardom, with the ‘80s synths playing up a more mature image. Later released as part of a single album titled The Third Project, “So Hot” helped land the album at No. 3 on Korean charts and went on to win first place at numerous Korean music shows.

“Look” - Red Velvet

Pulling from their “velvet” side, this 2017 B-side track from Red Velvet’s full album Perfect Velvet is laden with stereotypical ‘80s synth sounds. Stemming all the way back to their debut, the girls of Red Velvet are no strangers to retro influences, but there’s something particularly hypnotizing about the muted vocals of “Look” that makes you think Red Velvet and the ‘80s might be a match made in heaven.

“B.B.B” - Dalshabet

“B.B.B,” an abbreviation for “Big Baby Baby,” was released as the title track of Dalshabet’s 2014 mini-album of the same name. Sounding like something pulled straight out of the late-1980s, the track relies on percussive synth hits and to propel it forward, with the girls’ breathy vocals giving the song an extra edge.
