ATEEZ Frights and Delights Fans With “THE BLACK CAT NERO”
After becoming the first rookie idol group to win Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend with their rock version of Turbo’s mid-’90s dance track “검은 고양이 (Black Cat),” ATEEZ has gifted fans with a Halloween performance video for their rendition, “THE BLACK CAT NERO.”
Giving the track a spooky, heavy metal spin that their Immortal Songs performance didn’t have, the video opens with ATEEZ standing in a church while facing the altar and dressed in their outfits from their second anniversary concert, PORT OF CALL. Each member has cat scratches either on their face, neck, or chest except for San, who we can infer is the “black cat”—it’s definitely hinted at with some shots and with ATINY knowing his love of cats, it’s entirely possible. The settings for the performance alternate between the church, where if you look closely you can see a large photo of a man in the corner, and a cemetery shot in only red and black.
The video focuses mainly on the choreography, which takes pieces from the original Turbo dance, mixes them with moves from their track “THANXX,” adds in a hint of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, and original choreography befitting the eerie vibes; however, there are some filler scenes, including shots of black cats and the boys looking stunning in a possessed demon kind of way. While dancing in the cemetery, ATEEZ begins to awaken one of the corpses, who turns out to be Kim Jongkook of Turbo, a surprise nobody anticipated but everybody was thrilled by. The video closes with ATEEZ jamming with Jongkook before cutting to a shot of eight black cats sitting in the church. It then fades to black only to come back in and show the cemetery setting, ATEEZ walking out of the shadows and into the blood red light.
