Throwback Thursday: BTS Hits
BTS has just been nominated for their first GRAMMY! To celebrate this incredible milestone (that we hope is the first of many more!), this week The Kraze takes a look back at some of BTS’s most notable chart-toppers.
“Blood Sweat & Tears”
This track comes off the group’s second full album WINGS and surely marked a turning point in the band’s career. With a sensual, gothic concept that many declare to be their favorite concept in K-Pop, the comeback showed a different side to the boys of BTS. As a result, the song was the first of BTS’s to top the Gaon Digital chart and also garnered them six music show wins (at the time, a personal best). In addition to domestic accolades, the success of “Blood Sweat & Tears” also helped the WINGS album debut at No. 26 on the Billboard 200 chart—the highest for a K-Pop group at the time.
“DNA”
Though perhaps no longer viewed as one of the standouts in their extensive career, the impact of DNA on BTS’s worldwide fame is undeniable. The song marked another musical shift for the group, with a much heavier EDM influence than past releases, but the risks paid off: in addition to leading on domestic charts, “DNA” was the group’s first song to break into the highly-regarded Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 67. Due to its extreme success, BTS even made a U.S. television debut with a performance of the song at the American Music Awards. The song also marked the band’s first entry into the UK Singles chart. It’s safe to say “DNA” was the song that truly shot the group to superstardom.
“MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)” feat. Desiigner
A B-side off their 2017 mini-album Love Yourself: Her, “MIC Drop” was already a fan-favorite by its initial release but it was Steve Aoki’s remix of the song that took both the track and BTS to new heights. Released as a digital single (in which rapper Desiigner featured) and with a shiny, new music video, the track soared to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, far surpassing the remarkable record previously set by “DNA.” As a result, the track marked the group’s first song to receive somewhat regular radio play in the U.S., ultimately earning them a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The remix was also certified double platinum in Japan along with charting high in numerous countries such as Malaysia, the U.K., France, and Scotland.
“Fake Love”
Released as the single off their celebrated 2018 album Love Yourself: Tear, “Fake Love” became an easy favorite of die-hard fans and casual listeners everywhere. Showing yet another side to the group with what they coined “emo hip-hop,” the song reached the tops of charts worldwide, including breaking into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. In a daring move, the group’s comeback stage took place at the Billboard Music Awards, leaving audiences stunned around the world, including many music critics. Domestically, “Fake Love” earned the group an astounding twelve music show wins and went on to garner numerous awards at end-of-the-year award shows.
“Spring Day”
While the accomplishments of “Spring Day” might not be as jaw-dropping or as widespread as the formers on this list, it goes without saying that it’s one of their most special songs. Released as the title track for the repackaged You Never Walk Alone album, “Spring Day” was and still is the band’s longest charting song in Korea, never having fallen off the charts since its release in February 2017 and making it an easy pick for “Song of the Year” at the 2017 Melon Music Awards. To this day, “Spring Day” still sits in the top 100 on the MelOn chart, occasionally climbing higher, and has since become the longest charting song of all time on the platform.
