B-Sides: January 2020 Repackage Favorites
January was not only about the new releases and debuts of groups but also a month for repackaged albums with new side tracks to enjoy. Following the January release series, this week we will be suggesting a few B-sides from repackaged albums to listen to and enjoy.
“I Love U Crazy!” - Golden Child
Golden Child is back to gift us this year with their first repackage album, Without You. The album is comprised of two new tracks including the single “Without You,” and an additional side track, “I Love U Crazy!” The song is rhythmic and fun as the members decide to confess their love in a cheerful way. The happy shoutouts of “La La La” and peppy lyrics, “Golden time just for us two,” keep the mood in high spirits. Despite being pulled to dark concepts during the year, the group still maintains their sweet flower-boy shades, as they sound innocent and genuine.
“Ticky Tocky” – Super Junior
The Hallyu Kings are back for the year!
The swift return from the group seemed unexpected but became a fortunate happening for all ELFs out there. The treasured album of 2019, TIMELESS, was brought back to fan’s notice with four more tracks added to the already existing tracklist. As the name of the song suggests, “Ticky Tocky,” with its alluring lyrics, is a song that teases every listener. The music awakens various senses in the listener, especially with the members’ husky vocals. As for the niche parts, Eunhyuk’s crisp rap parts sound attractive, while Ryeowook’s sweet whispers impress the crowd. The fans’ all-time favorite would be the duo of Yesung and Eunhyuk, as the Tom and Jerry of the group harmonizes the rhythm. In other context, fans also believe that the lyrics might hint to the feeling of being affected by sleep paralysis.
“My Tragedy” – Taeyeon
“My Tragedy” is one of the three songs added in Taeyeon’s new repackage album Purpose and describes the feeling of resolving the problems by oneself. Taeyeon, known for her deep and thoughtful lyrics on realistic issues, once again gifts listeners a melancholic melody that’s only too relatable. The lyrics sing, “I don’t need anybody, No words mean anything to me,” responding to a broken relationship. The artist addresses the former lover as “my tragedy” and finally tries to get hold of herself, as she ends the song with “Goodbye now.” Though the song is set in a gloomy note, the comforting vocals of the artist and soothing words found in the end make the track a perfect companion for a listener during hard times.
“Drawing Our Memories” – Taeyeon
The other side track of Taeyeon’s repackage album is “Drawing Our Memories.” With soft keyboard notes, the ballad begins with the singer reflecting on warm flashbacks. The lyrics reminisce about past memories, as the lines compare human feelings with nature. Adding up to the sentimental feel of the song, the breezy music makes every listener feel light and want to dance along with the wind. The song will no doubt become one of Taeyeon’s best, as she emphasizes her ability as a flawless solo artist with both her warm and piercing vocals. With its references to natural elements, the song is a perfect fit for any travel playlist.
“Shadow” – Super Junior
“Shadow” is another new song released along with Super Junior’s repackage album. The song emits the style of retro and pop. The lyrics seem to talk about being dominated by a relationship or coming face to face with “fear,” which the members compare to a black sun or a shadow. What seems like dark memories or fear penetrates and keeps watch on the members’ every activity, which makes them feel uncomfortable. Until the end of the song, the members keep fighting the dark feeling as Eunhyuk ends with the line, “Please, let me go.”
