Set a Fire With Solar in “Spit It Out”

A much anticipated debut, Solar is here with her first solo release, “Spit It Out.” The singer is the last of the four MAMAMOO members to put out a solo project, and the result is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

Solar is known in the industry as having some of the best vocal chops, and with a discography as versatile as MAMAMOO’s, it was unclear the direction her first solo venture would take. As concept photos and teaser began to drop, however, one thing was clear: Solar was taking no prisoners with this debut.

“Spit It Out” is spicy, to say the least. With percussive synths set against a Latin guitar accompaniment, the song starts out in the singer’s husky lower register as she sings about being unapologetically herself. The track builds in intensity, with Solar’s characteristic belting showing up towards the end. Her vocal prowess, though, is not the focus of the song; instead, it is her enticing delivery of the message: Solar is a force to be reckoned with, she wants you to know it, and she wants you to be intimidated.

The music video for “Spit It Out” is no different. From the first moment she makes sharp eye contact with the camera, it’s impossible to take your eyes off the singer. Between stunning silhouettes and vibrant colors, the focus is always on Solar. Throughout the video, she dons what some may see as eyebrow-raising fashion, from claw-like nails to mostly see-through clothes to a bald cap. And that’s the point. Solar doesn’t care what the mainstream thinks is appropriate; she’s going to do what she wants and look flawless doing it. The sets are mostly simple, though there is the motif of fire throughout the entire video—perhaps the only thing that could make Solar appear more dangerous than she already does.

For an artist so uninterested in the approval of others, Solar’s “Spit It Out” is a straight knock-out. Check out the music video below, but make sure to take a deep breath to prepare yourself first.
