PinkFantasy Gives Off Egyptian Vibes in “Shadow Play”

You may not be familiar with PinkFantasy, but the group’s latest comeback proves they aren’t here to play. The eight-member group hasn’t spent much time in the spotlight as MyDoll Entertainment’s only active group, but this comeback may prove to change that. “Shadow Play” shows a new side to the rookie girl group, one that will certainly command your attention. It is important to note that this is a sub-unit of the group, known as Pink Fantasy Shadow, that features four members.

The Single: “Shadow Play”

It was clear that this comeback would be fierce from the teaser images, though with a different tone from previous release “Fantasy.” The Egyptian influence is apparent in the minor scale usage at the very beginning of the track. This foundation is then met with a reggae-inspired pop beat, which is extremely catchy and perfect for the summer. The repeated use of a minor key is the main factor in making this track stand out so boldly, and it presents a type of musical flavor that many groups don’t tend to explore. Though the track starts out all vocals, the first rap verse drops after the chorus and gives a much heavier impact. The talent is almost striking as SeeA leads the charge with the first vocal line and the first rap line after the chorus. The intensity grows in the string instrumental introduced two thirds of the way through the song, emphasizing the novel musical styles used throughout. All in all, it’s a very intriguing track that certainly stands out amongst the current lineup of comebacks.

The visuals are also quite impactful from the very first shot, with the girls posed together and covering each other’s eyes. The index and middle finger are separated to reveal a single eye, showcasing a powerful visual that emphasizes the “shadow” aspect of the group. As the song begins, the girls are bathed in red light, the foreground completely darkened so that only their movement can be seen. The individual shots show SeeA wrapped in constricting red cloth, Harin blindfolded with a cloth exploding in colorful butterflies, Arang with light blinding her and only one eye open, and SangA with what appear to be broken angel wings bathed in red. The elements are up to personal metaphorical interpretation, but they paint a vivid picture of intrigue. The outfits often used are combinations of either black and gold or white and gold to drive home the Egyptian influences, with the black and gold particularly standing out in choreography shots. Our personal favorite is Arang’s golden shorts, which definitely steal the show. The visuals definitely tie in to the track itself and make for a perfect package.
