Underrated Girl Groups You Need to Know About
In the fast-moving world of K-Pop, with new groups debuting left and right, it’s easy to gloss over real talent. It’s also much more difficult for groups to be successful when they come from smaller companies, but the beautiful thing about this is that they can foster more authentic communities of fans who love them for their music. If you’ve been looking for new girl groups to stan or simply want to bless your ears with something fresh and different, look no further. Here are four girl groups making great music who deserve your support.
DreamNote
A six-member group that debuted in 2018 under iMe KOREA, DreamNote makes fun yet catchy music that you’ll be replaying all day. To get started, their latest single “WISH,” released on an EP in January, is a perfect introduction to the group. The girls got further recognition earlier this year with a viral video of them covering EXO’s “Love Shot” amongst other songs, with much of the buzz surrounding member YOUI. But the group as a whole has the potential to be a growing force in the industry. With the “WISH” video being a pink dream, combined with their visuals and strong dancing ability, what’s not to like?
LABOUM
LABOUM has been around for a while, since 2014 actually, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to get into them. Their name comes from a French term meaning “The Party,” and their vocals are not to be played with. If you haven’t heard their song “Firework” yet, released in late 2019, then gear up for your new favorite K-Pop song. The five-member group is elegantly growing, with some thriving in acting roles and others producing and composing. They’re a creative and talented bunch that deserve more hype to their names, and if you like a more mature and polished sound, they’re your girls!
HINAPIA
Though some fans are concerned about disbandment, HINAPIA, formed by OSR Entertainment, is an impressive group regardless. Their debut and only official song, “DRIP,” was released in 2019 and left us craving more of their energy and swag. With former PRISTIN members in the group, the girls know exactly what they’re doing. If you need more content besides their one song, definitely check out the covers posted on their channel. Let’s hope we hear more from them in the future, but for now, we’re putting “DRIP” on repeat.
ELRIS
This seven-member group initially debuted in 2017 and added two new members, EJ and Chaejeong, just this year. ELRIS’s last comeback was in February with “JACKPOT,” which blessed us with outfits and a vibe perfectly fitting to the title. If you want some feel-good summer music, or just anything you can dance to, they’re perfect. With voices that blend together like honey, and the music taste we like to see (member EJ covered Lizzo’s “Juice”), you should definitely check these girls out if you haven’t already.
These girl groups are all ultra talented and different from each other. So if you’re a girl group fanatic or simply want to widen your tastes, these groups could use some love! It’s exciting to see the range of talent and music styles across the K-Pop industry, and it doesn’t hurt to look past the bigger names to breathe life into something new.
