Throwback Thursday: Disco K-Pop

With the recent release of J.Y. Park’s “When We Disco” and BTS’s much anticipated upcoming single “Dynamite,” there’s no time like the present to appreciate the 1970s! Check out The Kraze’s favorite disco-influenced tracks below.

“Love Options” - BESTie

Initially released as a single in 2013 and later released on their album Hot Baby, BESTie’s “Love Options” has a little bit of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Make no mistake, however, there’s still plenty of disco fever to spare. The string-like synths give the song its bright, upbeat nature from the first note to the last.

“Sweet Girl” - B1A4

If anyone’s got the disco genre covered, it is undoubtedly B1A4. Off their 2015 mini-album of the same name, their song “Sweet Girl” is about as groovy as it gets. With a funk guitar, dreamy strings, and the boys’ dulcet tones, “Sweet Girl” will have you swooning. If the song alone doesn’t do the trick, the music video certainly will.

“Signal” - f(x)

f(x)’s 2013 album Pink Tape featured the B-side “Signal,” another fusion of elements from the ‘70s and ‘80s that still has that signature disco feel. The beat is carried by the rhythm guitar—a staple in the disco genre—and will have you feeling funky fresh.

“Venus” - Rainbow note

Rainbow note’s 2019 track “Venus” leans more towards the city pop side of things, but the bass and guitar are still unquestionably influenced by the disco movement. Moreover, the sparkling synths in the track give the song that magical feel that only disco can.

“Brave New World” - Brown Eyed Girls

Another true disco K-Pop classic, 2015’s “Brave New World” by Brown Eyed Girls is a dream come true for any fan of the genre. The building strings in the beginning of the song set the stage perfectly and the running bass and guitar will have you desperately wanting to be on the dance floor.
