The boys of Golden Child are back with a track bound to heat up the winter months. In stark contrast to their sprightly “Pump It Up” comeback this past fall, the sultry “Burn It” pulls from Latin influences and has what is easily one of the best music videos so far in 2021.

Golden Child’s latest mini-album [YES.] features six tracks, including an instrumental intro that hints at the more mature image the group has been fostering over the past year. “Burn It,” their newest title track, certainly follows suit. Embracing elements of Latin and reggaeton music as they sing of watching a loved one in pain, “Burn It” revisits the darker side Golden Child has been experimenting with since their “Wannabe” comeback, but with a little more flavor. Compared to previous titles, the song errs more on the vocal side, especially in the chorus with Jibeom, Y, and Joochan, though that’s not to say that Tag and Jangjun’s rap verses don’t pack a punch.

It feels almost insulting to call the nearly seven-minute video for “Burn It” a music video. Centered around a zombie apocalypse plot that pits the members against the undead and each other, “Burn It” takes your lyrically typical love song and turns it into something vividly cinematic. Between Bomin’s tragic love story, Jaehyun’s sad past, and Tag and Joochan’s haunting scene, the video for “Burn It” is sure to make you pause at least once, if just to take it all in and get your emotions in check. And even then, if the tear-jerking plot doesn’t get you, the insanely synchronized choreography surely will.

As for the rest of [YES.], “Cool Cool” is a song that easily could’ve been the album’s title track, but is thankfully being promoted alongside “Burn It.” Capitalizing on the group’s penchant for dance tracks a la Take A Leap’s “OMG,” the heavy bass and stripped-back chorus make this song well...effortlessly cool. “Round N Round” is another EDM-dance cut with more of a synth focus that gives the song an almost ‘90s touch. “Milky Way” isn’t exactly a ballad—especially by Golden Child standards—but compared to its darker predecessors, it sounds like one. Between its heartfelt message and relaxing vocals, the song is sure to be a source of comfort for many in this time when idols and fans cannot meet. “Breathe” closes out the mini-album on a bright note, bringing the retro influences back to the max with punchy synth hits but ends rather abruptly, hinting that there might be more to come.
