WOODZ Expresses a Toxic Love Cycle in “WAITING”
It’s always a good day when WOODZ releases new music. The raw, unhinged version of idol Cho Seungyoun has always gone to the extreme to personify his music, and that rings true for the latest title track. The title track supports the release of new mini-album ONLY LOVERS LEFT.
“WAITING” has a rhythm and feel much like 2020 title release “Love Me Harder” with a driving beat and higher register of notes from the singer taking center stage. Without knowing better, you may think this song has a somewhat cheery or less serious disposition, but the lyrics sing of a toxic relationship that he’s unable to let go of that’s stealing his sanity. He does such an amazing job of constructing upbeat acoustic pop tracks that carry heavier messages, which successfully relays more serious topics to an addicting beat. Even upon first listen, this song is totally addicting and nothing short of an earworm. If you’re familiar with WOODZ’s discography, this new release fits seamlessly into his style.
Do be forewarned if watching the video: guns are somewhat of a centerpiece to the story, with some imagery threatening suicidal actions (as a heads up to those sensitive)! The darker tone of the lyrics are really driven home by the imagery in the video, which focuses a lot on shots of WOODZ in the dark, plus less use of bright colors, save for the photography darkroom. The singer is seen in emotional turmoil, thrashing about in a number of different rooms in an attempt to release some of his pent up anger and fear. The video concept itself is simple, but paints a very vivid picture of toxicity in relationships and the effect it has on an individual.
This is a fantastic release yet again from the popular singer, so be sure to check out “WAITING” below and give ONLY LOVERS LEFT a listen!
