Kuk Seungpyo Asks “Why Do You?” In His New Music Video

Indie K-R&B artist Kuk Seungpyo partnered with American R&B singer Caleb Cruise to bring the all-English song titled “Why Do You?”

About the Song

The song tells the story of a relationship going hot and cold and the indifferent feelings Seungpyo has about the relationship. The song's melody is built around an R&B trap beat in addition to the highly prominent sound of snares. The snares are so prominent they overpower the vocals at times throughout the song. The lyrics are highly telling of Seungpyo’s feelings. With lines like “You meant nothing at all,” it's easy to jump to the conclusion that Seungpyo is just playing the girl, however he goes on to sing “You make me wanna break up, makeup, stay up make love…” which then changes the idea that he is just unsure of what he wants in the relationship. The entire song is really just a roller coaster of emotions tucked into a smooth track fitting for anyone’s kick back and chill playlist.

About the Music Video

The music video helps illustrate the hot and cold experienced in the relationship. Seungpyo and his on-screen girlfriend are seen throughout in varying scenes in color and black and white. In the scenes shot in color, the tension is apparent in their interactions as well as a sense of unhappiness between the pair. On the opposite end, we see the scenes shot in black and white with the couple blissfully happy. These scenes are juxtaposed with clips of Seungpyo singing by himself and the image of a burning incense. Towards the end of the music video, there is a lull in the song where Seungpyo appears and sings “Why do you love me baby?” and then the girlfriend lip syncs the line “Why don’t you let me go?” After this part, the clear split between hot-and-cold black and white changes, and the scenes blur together almost like a movie. You could say this is when Seungpyo finally comes to a decision about his relationship. The incense is also shown in these blurred scenes still burning, but almost going out. Finally at the end of the song, Seungpyo appears in full color singing “But I’m fine on my own, it's all good.” Shortly after the song ends, the incense appears at the very end of its life and burns out. Throughout the music video the incense is clearly a metaphor for the relationship and it going out symbolizes the end for the couple.
