Sunmi Transforms Into Catwoman for New Single, “꼬리 (Tail)”

Hailed as one of the most successful soloists in K-Pop, Sunmi is back with her new single “꼬리 (Tail)” which is paired with the B-side song “꽃같네 (What The Flower),” both co-written by Sunmi. The song has a much darker concept than her 2020 hits “보라빛 밤 (Pporappippam)” and “When We Disco” with J.Y. Park. The song is heavily inspired by vintage spy movie soundtracks with an interesting guitar riff and looming background instrumentals, giving the song its mysterious vibe. Lyrically, the song talks about a cat-like villainess passionately in love. Sunmi also uses several cat references and word-play in the song.

The music video puts focus on Sunmi’s equally sultry choreography, scattered with glamorous outfits, makeup, and stunning nail art. The storyline is inspired by the DC Comics movie Catwoman and follows Sunmi on a revenge mission following a betrayal. The music video is reminiscent of second generation female idol videos like AOA’s “Like A Cat”, EXID’s “매일밤 (Every Night),” and Sunmi’s very own debut hit-single “24시간이 모자라 (24 Hours).” The song was choreographed by world-renowned choreographer Janelle Ginestra who has worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and K-Pop acts like Red Velvet. Sunmi worked closely with the choreographer to create an intricate routine that incorporates cat-like movements.

B-side “꽃같네 (What The Flower)” was co-written by songwriter Hong Sojin who Sunmi indirectly worked with in 2020 on the song “OH YEAH” by labelmate Park Won which she featured on. The song is a jazz-influenced track supported by live instruments and once again uses cat references in its lyrics.

With “꼬리 (Tail),” Sunmi steps on to a more mature path, exuding her unique and bold personality, and solidifying her spot as a diva of the K-Pop industry. Check out the music video for the song below!
