Living the Dream with Fantasy House

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to style––and that counts for houses too. Make your choice: is it mid-century modern, nautical, bohemian, scandinavian, or rustic? Get some antique furniture and ambient lighting; anything and everything that you want works. Add the small details (every finishing touch counts!)––the aesthetic lights hanging on the wall, polaroid photos taped on the wall, dolls taking up the corner of your bed––that create a big picture of the very room customized to suit your tastes.

The vast spectrum of interior design styles presents an endless number of options for anyone and everyone to incorporate into the comforts of their homes. But lo and behold, living in the house of your dreams isn’t as easy as one might think. Plus, what if reality serves to be the opposite of what you've always imagined? It may be the rapid decline in pursuing a certain style or the difficulty of trying to decorate the house just like your saved pin on Pinterest.

At times like this, it seems ideal to spend a short but fulfilling time at a pre-decorated house reflective of the one in their fantasy. Of course, this is easier said than done, but SBS has made this idea come to life.

The broadcasting network’s newest reality show, Fantasy House, serves the lifetime experience for celebrity guests; hosting a temporary stay at a home that best reflects their ideal space, the Fantasy House team presents the true healing experience for their clients and viewers alike.

Quick Overview of the Show

Planned by SBS’s current events and culture department, the conceptual notion of improving quality of life through a “trial-run” is set into motion. Similar to how one would try on clothes for the “fit” or taking a food sample to check if the product is worth buying, the production team searches for a pre-existing house in which their clients of the week can temporarily reside in.

This is the first time a Korean reality show has ever been built on this unique format, and this unfamiliar layout is ultimately what caught the public’s attention and engaged them into tuning in. The show proved its divergent charm from other programs as it upgraded its title from a pilot program to an official SBS weekly variety show.

Fantasy House aims to introduce to every star client a personalized space that fulfills most, if not all, conditions discussed prior to their homestay experience. The production team pours in an immense amount of effort to discover the right house; a few weeks since the first official broadcast, it’s been a series of surprises because every client’s preferences have been fulfilled (and I mean it literally; the celebrity’s whole moodboard is literally Ctrl+V’ed into their temporary living space!). For ease of visualization throughout the show, paper models of the client’s ideal house are made (by hand); the paper art is simply amazing in expressing all the tiniest details. I’m more than positive that the adorable paper miniatures will steal viewers’ hearts, so make sure to check it out! (You can actually take a look at the paper art models right here!)

Welcome the Cast

Introducing the four hosts of Fantasy House, the team appears at the studio along with their clients. They take up the role of asking questions to guests, guiding viewers throughout the show, and ultimately, to generate a wave of comfort to guests as fellow celebrities as well as embrace the healing experience as if it’s their own. Let’s take a look at the crew members of the Fantasy House architecture office.

First up is comedienne Park Misun, the head manager of the Fantasy House office. A veteran in the entertainment field, Park Misun exhibits her witty character, easily bonding with guests thanks to her easygoing attitude. Without a doubt, the entertainer creates a welcoming atmosphere that facilitates a friendly conversation among the cast and their clients.

Actor Ryu Sooyoung also appears as one of the hosts and fulfills his position as one of the team’s general managers. As an actor who does not appear in various media aside from dramas and films, it’s definitely a good surprise to see the star every week on Fantasy House. Ryu Sooyoung reveals his generous and sweet personality that clearly contrasts from his charismatic characters. Stay tuned for more appearances of Ryu Sooyoung outside of his acting boundary!

Jang Sungkyu, the “workman,” is in charge of putting interesting questions out into the studio. Thanks to the team’s assistant manager’s hard carry, certain points of curiosity are clarified by guests and the cast alike, providing an answer to questions that may arise among viewers. The entertainer also does not fail to brighten up the atmosphere with his sense of humor, contributing to the entertaining aspect and comfortable mood that is directly conveyed to the audience.

The last host of the show is architect Yoo Hyunjoon. A professional in the field of architecture, Yoo Hyunjoon takes part in interpreting the physical and psychological effects of architectural and interior styles. Something the viewers should look out for is definitely the architect’s comments in psychologically linking one’s preferences with the physical spaces; explanations on how one’s perception can be altered according to intuitive emotions and thoughts comes as an eye-opening insight on the most obvious details we could have been missing out on.

A Step Into “My” Living Space

Imagine sleeping, resting, and simply staying in the comforts of an environment that bears the mood and surroundings of your dreams. Though it only lasts for a seven-day period, that interval of time is more than enough for a refresh. Celebrities are given the chance to eat, play, and live away from the stage or set, taking a break from daily worries and stress.

Especially with the frustration of being stuck at home these days, Fantasy House can become your very own stress-reliever. Don’t miss out on watching various stars’ healing experiences and the opportunity to feel the equivalent amount of warmth yourself.
