Throwback Thursday: SHINee’s The Misconceptions of Us
SHINee’s back! In celebration of their recent “Don’t Call Me” comeback, let’s take a look back at one of the group’s most iconic eras: The Misconceptions of Us.
“Spoiler”
In February 2013, SHINee released the first part of their third full album, The Misconceptions of You. Starting things off was the song “Spoiler” which, unbeknownst to most, was a spoiler for the project as a whole. Dropping song titles from not only the first part of the album like “Dynamite,” but also several songs from the second installment such as “Excuse Me Miss” and “Like a Fire,” SHINee built a hype like no other for the album.
“Dream Girl”
The title track for part one was the quintessential SHINee song “Dream Girl.” Showcasing the group’s penchant for dance tracks, the song was described by its producers as an “acid electro-funk song.” Following the theme of misconceptions, the song is about coming face-to-face with the person of your dreams, only to find out they truly only exist in dreams. With its signature mic-stand choreography and a brightly colored music video to match, “Dream Girl” is one of SHINee’s catchiest tracks.
“Beautiful”
Promoted alongside “Dream Girl” was the B-side “Beautiful,” a song that nearly matches the former in its upbeat, feel-good intensity. In the song, the members express their devotion, reassuring their loved ones of their beauty. With its heavy synths and soaring chorus, this dance-pop track is the stuff of concert encore dreams and dance parties alike.
“Why So Serious?”
SHINee kicked off the second part of the Misconceptions project—this time, titled The Misconceptions of Me—with the grittier “Why So Serious?” Between a gritty guitar riff and a brass line, “Why So Serious?” is like a musical punch in the face (in a good way, we promise). Add to that an unorthodox zombie storyline in the lyrics and you have a concept that only SHINee could pull off.
“‘SHINe’ (Medusa 1)”
“‘SHINe’ (Medusa 1)” was promoted alongside “Why So Serious?”, but don’t be fooled by its sweet and sentimental lyrics; the song fits right along with the darker theme of the album. Featuring a heavy drum beat and live stages that boast some of fans’ favorite looks, “SHINe” makes for the perfect follow-up to “Why So Serious?”
