GWSN Shows Us THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON In New Comeback
Critically acclaimed girl group GWSN has made their comeback with their new mini-album THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON, supported by the eerie lead single “Like It Hot.” With the cover art designed by member Miya, the group is exploring the concept of duality and the darkness that hides behind the light with this new project. The album contains six tracks, including a sub-unit track performed by members Seoryoung, Anne, Lena, and Miya.
The album’s title track “Like It Hot” has a groovy hook which makes use of an anti-drop, but ends up making the song extremely catchy. The girls primarily use their lower register for the song and through the lyrics, the girls express hope to learn more about “you,” referring to the listeners instead of a love interest. Playing into the theme of the album, they want to share secrets with the other person, and the music video effectively conveys the meaning of the song. From the outfits to set designs, the concept of duality is evident, and with simple choreography, GWSN is able to create a perfect summer song in this TikTok era.
The album opens with “Burn,” a future house track where the girls deliver the message that they must burn their past and be reborn as a new self. The rhythmic dance song “I Can’t Breathe” is yet another dreamy song. With a style not often seen in girl group songs, “I Can’t Breathe” is quite possibly the most unique track on the album. Another standout track on the album is “e i e i o,” which has a funky bass line and eerie but comical lyrics. “Starry Night” mixes R&B and trap genres, and delivers an emotional theme of the solitude one feels on the inside. The album closes with the track “I Sing (lalala),” a medium tempo song with a jazzy R&B style, where the song highlights the members’ vocals. Different members took part in co-writing the lyrics for all songs on the album.
All of the album’s B-side tracks and the title track shine brightly and showcase different charms of GWSN. The songs are experimental while remaining catchy, adding flavor to the album. GWSN takes another step in carving a space for themselves in K-Pop and they do so beautifully. Watch the music video for “Like It Hot” below!
