SF9 and the “Enough” Comeback

On February 20, 2019, SF9 released their sixth mini-album NARCISSUS and the music video for title track “Enough.” The mini-album consists of six tracks and features writing credits for leader Youngbin, Zuho, Hwiyoung, and Chani. Zuho also helped compose “Play Hard,” and the rapper holds writing, composition, and arrangement credits for “Life Is So Beautiful.”

The Music Video

The music video opens with Chani walking towards a mirror and staring at his reflection as well as peering into a pool of water, relating the music video for “Enough” to the Greek myth of Narcissus, who was shown his reflection in the water and fell in love with it. Although this myth is where the album title took inspiration, the lyrics for “Enough” do not center around this myth; instead, they focus on letting the girl they’re seeing know that they don’t need makeup and that they’re pretty enough.

That being said, many of the scenes of the music video focus around the myth in a similar fashion to Chani’s opening scene with a heavy emphasis on SF9 being trapped in their own reflections by mirrors; Yoo Taeyang (who was going by just Taeyang at the time of promotion) dances in a circular room with walls of mirrors, Youngbin’s reflection is seen in the pool of water, and multiple members are seen performing in a room of nothing but mirrors or in front of a never-ending mirror reflection. Toward the end of the video, the mirror from the music video’s opening scene shatters while showing Chani’s reflection before then switching to Dawon, Inseong, Yoo Taeyang, Hwiyoung, Youngbin, Jaeyoon, and finally Rowoon.

While SF9 are no strangers to the sexier, more sensual comebacks, there is something to be said for how truly devastating seeing multiple mesh-clad Yoo Taeyangs in one scene is.

SF9 also released a live English performance video for “Enough” on March 28, 2019. It’s not a perfect translation though, and the beauty of the lyrics gets lost in the translation, as well as some of the lyrical flow and rhythm. It should be noted that Zuho is not in this performance video as he was on hiatus due to a worsening back injury.

The Comeback Performances

SF9 had their comeback for “Enough” on M!COUNTDOWN on February 21, 2019. As mentioned above, Zuho was unable to promote with the group during this comeback, and is therefore missing from the comeback performances. Along with performing the title track, SF9 also performed a shortened version of B-side “Play Hard,” with the song going from the first chorus to the dance break that follows the second chorus, ultimately cutting out Youngbin, Zuho, and Dawon’s verses. Dawon opened with Zuho’s lines and a noticeable lack of the beautiful lilac hair seen in the concept photos. Each member wore jeans, a t-shirt, and some form of jacket, and Youngbin covered Zuho’s final verse to round out the performance.

For their performance of “Enough,” the stage was set up to resemble scenes from the music video, with the group’s logo seen on some of the columns if shown from the right angle, and they wore outfits seen in the video as well. SF9’s choreography was on point as always, and the section where Jaeyoon sings followed by Rowoon before the two literally swap who is standing and lying down with the help of Dawon was seamless.

SF9 performed “Enough” during their KCON 2019 Japan set and “Play Hard” during their slot at KCON 2019 NYC, but an official YouTube upload from Mnet does not exist for the latter. The upside to these performances, however, is that SF9 had all nine boys present.

The Legacy

While brought up in our review of the mini-album back in 2019, there was a bit of controversy surrounding “Enough” before it was released, which may have affected how NARCISSUS was received by fans and non-fans. However, after the release of the mini-album and music video, it appears that the minor controversy was dropped, as there are no further mentions of it online.

This is one of SF9’s least popular title tracks in terms of music video views on YouTube, and this could go back to the above-mentioned controversy. As mentioned in their previous Artist Highlight that focused on “O Sole Mio,” one of their most popular comebacks to date, the combined views for the “Enough” music videos on the official FNC Entertainment YouTube channel and the 1theK channel still sit below 10 million views.

NARCISSUS peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard U.S. World Albums Chart, No. 4 on the Gaon Weekly Album Chart, and at No. 8 and No. 10 on the Gaon Monthly Album Chart for February and March, respectively. But that’s where this release’s history ends. “Enough” did not appear on any major Gaon or Billboard charts, the group received no wins for this comeback, and they were not nominated for any awards during the end-of-year awards season.

Though it may feel like NARCISSUS and “Enough” didn’t do very much for SF9, the mini-album sold more copies than all of their previous releases, including Knights of the Sun featuring their ever-popular “O Sole Mio,” and the group has continued to sell more and more. So for anybody who didn’t give “Enough” a chance back in 2019, we hope you’ll go back and stream the official FNC Entertainment upload of the track above and on any music platforms. “Enough” and SF9 deserve better.
