LOONA Brings Bollywood Vibes in “PTT (Paint The Town)”

When LOONA makes a return, you know it’s gonna be a good day. This comeback officially marks Haseul’s return to the lineup for the first time since “Butterfly,” and Orbits couldn’t be more elated! Since their debut, the full group has explored a number of different concepts, but this time they go where K-Pop has not gone before—at least on a larger scale. With a Bollywood-inspired concept, LOONA inspires action in the addictive and powerful “PTT (Paint The Town).”

Conquering the Bollywood sound can be a difficult line to toe, not wanting to spill over into appropriation territory. “PTT (Paint The Town)” succeeds in fostering appreciation over appropriation, melding iconic Bollywood elements with a K-Pop sound for a perfect merging of cultures. The song goes hard from the moment it opens with the Indian back vocals, tablas, and flute taking center stage before taking a back seat to the intense drum beat. Aside from the melody, the vocalists in LOONA hit some rather complex harmonizations, creating some awesome dissonance that brings an interesting flavor while still highlighting the skill within the vocals. It took a few listens to really pick out these subtleties, and with each listen the song becomes more and more impressive. Even if it’s not your favorite upon first listen, it’s hard to ignore how strong the track is the more you listen for the distinctive melodic elements.

When it comes to the music video, a guaranteed Digipedi production, you know you’re getting quality. The video maintains a darker concept to match more recent comebacks, which is most prominent in the massively high-scale choreography shots at the chorus where the girls are dressed in leather and chains in front of a stormy red background and tons of backup dancers surrounding them. Even the individual member shots have intense charisma and follow along the beat, the best example being the shot of Olivia Hye banging the drum to the beat of the song. There also seems to be a callback to Kim Lip’s solo track “Eclipse,” as the opening shot has her in the same white shirt, red skirt, and blond hair, placed in a similar coliseum style set. This alludes to an important LOONAVERSE plot, and Orbits will certainly dig deeper into the true meaning.

LOONA has knocked it out of the park once again, and seems to only get better with time. It’s hard to ignore such strong production both musically and visually, and it’s no wonder so many people are so hyped about LOONA in general.
