Female Idols Covering Other K-Pop Songs on Stage

In a previous article, we got to take a look at a few covers that female idols in K-Pop sang in English. For this week’s article, we’re featuring a few memorable covers by the ladies in the industry where they perform the song and choreography of another group. Their cover performances allow them to put their own spin on the original and give support to the original artist. With so many to choose from, here’s a few unforgettable K-Pop covers by the ladies! 

“Mr.Chu” 

In June 2016, Cube Entertainment’s CLC performed on M!COUNTDOWN with a special stage where they covered Apink’s “Mr. Chu.” Their performance brought a refreshing and charming aspect to a classic!  

“So Hot” 

In December 2017, BLACKPINK performed on-stage for SBS Gayo Daejeon with a remixed version of “So Hot” by Wonder Girls. The remix, made by TEDDY, 24, and Danny Chung, allows the track to bring a girl crush energy that matches BLACKPINK’s aura. The girls even added their signature ad-lib “BLACKPINK in your area,” and a rap that fit perfectly for members Lisa and Jennie

“Hot Issue” 

In September 2018, (G)I-DLE was at MBC’s DMC Festival where they did a cover performance of 4Minute’s “Hot Issue.” With a fun performance to respect their seniors from Cube Entertainment, (G)I-DLE paid an amazing tribute to one of the most well-known second generation tracks.  

“Me Gustas Tu” 

In April 2016, JYP Entertainment’s TWICE gave a beautiful special stage performance for Show! Music Core of GFRIEND’s popular track “Me Gustas Tu.” TWICE performed in light blue and white school uniform-style outfits to match the original, and stunned many with their powerful vocals.  

“Roly Poly" 

In December 2020, ITZY performed for SBS Gayo Daejeon in Daegu with a special stage of T-ARA’s “Roly Poly.” In this short cover performance, the vocals of ITZY fit perfectly and made this a stage to remember. Their cute and charismatic auras brought back the nostalgia of the original song.  

“Coming of age ceremony” 

In March 2015, 9MUSES was invited to perform for the twentieth anniversary of M!COUNTDOWN, where they gave a rendition of the timeless track “Coming of age ceremony” by Park Jiyoon. Even though there are several stage performances of this track by other idols and groups, 9MUSES really brought the sexiness of this track with elegance and class.  

“Love Battery” 

In May 2020, Blockberry Creative’s LOONA performed on Immortal Songs 2 where they gave a special stage performance of “Love Battery” by Hong Jinyoung. According to the comments on the video, LOONA learned this choreography in under 24 hours, proving how talented and skilled these ladies are.  

“PLAYING WITH FIRE”

In 2020, HINAPIA performed on the Japanese show Power of K Lab7, where they gave a smooth rendition of BLACKPINK’s “PLAYING WITH FIRE.” The girls are well-known for being members of the now-disbanded PRISTIN. In this performance, HINAPIA gave a balanced and confident stage presence that shows how talented they are. 

“Into The New World” 

In 2017, Happyface Entertainment’s Dreamcatcher uploaded a special clip cover performance of Girls’ Generation's most well-known track, “Into The New World.” For the most part, every K-Pop fan knows how special the track is, especially since it’s a song that many groups cover on stage. Dreamcatcher really did the original track justice with their cute and elegant video. 

“Loving U”  

In 2016, Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment’s WJSN went on M!COUNTDOWN with a special stage of SISTAR’s “Loving U.” WJSN made this summer track feel more emotional with their warming vocals. 

“To My Boyfriend”

In 2016, Source Music’s GFRIEND gave a bubbly rendition of Fin.K.L’s “To My Boyfriend” on M!COUNTDOWN. Of various covers by idol groups, GFRIEND’s vocals fit perfectly since it gives a playful and sweet vibe. Many fans online have commented saying that this is the best cover of the Fin.K.L track, and it looks as though there are several fandoms that agree.  

“Feel Special” 

In December 2019, Woollim Entertainment’s Rocket Punch performed on Music Bank with a special stage cover of TWICE’s “Feel Special.” The six-member group shined with elegant outfits, and gave a lovely rendition of the JYPE track. With such a deep meaning in the song itself, it shows how much Rocket Punch enjoys and cares about this song.
