“Dumhdurum” by Apink

I think Apink’s songs and style grew as they grew up. Considering how bubbly their earlier music was, they could have easily faded away because they no longer fit the “young girls” image, or they would have continued making that kind of music and become, well, cringey, for lack of a better word. With “Dumhdurum,” they once again present themes of love, but a matured, grown-up love and also heartbreak. Both in terms of lyrics and sound and even style, they show that age isn’t a negative factor. It’s one of their most sophisticated, but also trendy, releases. Not to mention the viral pair choreography. I still watch it and I’m just as shook as the first time.

“SCREAM” - Dreamcatcher

The metal influences [in Dreamcatcher’s “SCREAM”] were so strong it felt like home. On top of that, the song seemed to personify a very difficult traumatic situation I experienced and aided in my healing from it through the lyrics.

“My Flower” - LADIES’ CODE

LADIES’ CODE was one of the first few girl groups I had come to love when I got into K-Pop, and I have since been very supportive of their journey and growth. The single album MYST3RY was very important to me at the time, and this song will always be one I can return to and feel at peace while listening to.

“RBB (Really Bad Boy)” - Red Velvet

[“RBB (Really Bad Boy)”] was probably the first girl group song I really vibed with when I was getting into K-Pop. I know it's not Red Velvet’s most popular, but I love the cheesy horror movie vibes of the music video, the instrumentation of the song, and all of the interesting vocal layering throughout the track.

“Lonely” - 2NE1

[“Lonely” by 2NE1] is a beautiful song that hit a chord with me at the time. The vocals really show off their unique voices, and the song has a heart that still resonates a decade later.

“TT” - TWICE

[“TT” by TWICE] came to me (before I was into K-Pop) at a Korean restaurant in 2017 and was a single ray of light from the dark depths of a months-long depressive episode. It’s a really good song, but it’s also special to me. I didn’t know any other K-Pop, and I think it’s extra special when a song reaches you without any bias for the group or anything, y’know what I mean?

“Cleansing Cream” - Brown Eyed Girls

[“Cleansing Cream”] is really a one-of-a-kind song from Brown Eyed Girls. Their vocals and the piano in the background blend well together. It’s so emotional when you watch the music video, as well. Every time I listen to it, it makes me tear up because of the memories I have with this song and the tear-jerking lyrics.

“Crazy” - 4Minute

You can’t talk about iconic girl group songs without mentioning “Crazy” by 4Minute. Whether it’s the original or a cover, “Crazy” still holds its own as a powerful and sexy bop. I listen to it whenever I need to feel like a baddy and it always does the trick.

“Oh my god” - (G)-IDLE

Currently, my favorite song has to be (G)I-DLE's "Oh my god" because of how unique it is compared to many other K-Pop tracks in general. From the atmospheric gothic vibes mixing wonderfully with the pop sound, the girls’ stunning vocals and well-made rap verses, the strategic vocal compositions, the stunning cinematography in the music video unlike what any other girl group is willing to show, and the not-very-subtle female pronouns used amidst the chiming church bell make this a masterpiece. Plus, they released an English version that is just perfect. Compared to other groups that have released English versions, this one can stand on its own, or what I like to do, listen to both versions back-to-back on repeat. It's just that good.

“Into the New World” - Girls’ Generation (SNSD)

There are few songs that come close to the greatness that is “Into the New World” by Girls’ Generation (SNSD). From the captivating piano melody in the intro to the catchy chorus that makes every listener hum along, this timeless classic will forever remain my favorite girl group song. The lyrics are also just so uplifting and beautiful that whenever I listen to it, I think to myself, “Whatever’s going on, you’re gonna get through it.”

"Wrap Me In Plastic" - MOMOLAND

I’ve been really into MOMOLAND’s version of “Wrap Me In Plastic” with Chromance. I don’t have a long or deep reasoning behind it; it just hypes me up and puts me in a positive mood every time I listen to it. It mixes the current retro trends with today’s Gen Z vibes very well. And it also feels very empowering to me—like yes, you may call me “mine” but only because I let you, and I might call you “master” but only because I want to; I am the one holding the power. At least in my interpretation, but I like turning things into boss energy.

“Loving U” - SISTAR

[“Loving U”] is a song that reminds me of summer and the moment I really fell in love with SISTAR and made them my ultimate favorite girl group, despite no longer being active. It’s cute, upbeat, and puts me in a better mood when listening to it.

“STEP” - KARA

So many great songs to choose from, but one of my favorites would be “STEP” by KARA. I am a sucker for a dance bop! I love the catchy upbeat tempo and iconic choreography. Listening to this song brings the nostalgia of when I was first getting into K-Pop and gives me a serotonin boost each time.

"UNTOUCHABLE" - EVERGLOW

I figured that I would share a recent favorite B-side of mine, and that's “UNTOUCHABLE” by EVERGLOW. This song gives me such clubbing vibes and a part of me reminisces of my early 20s back on the dance floor. Also, I’ve heard that the fandom has referred to this song as an LBGTQ+ anthem and I honestly get that vibe, too! Definitely a great positive empowerment song to go clubbing with your friends and partners.
