Soyeon Welcomes Fans to the Adult World with Windy

Soyeon, a jack of all trades in K-Pop, has dropped her debut mini-album Windy, featuring her refreshing and spunky title track “BEAM BEAM.” Even though she hasn’t dropped solo work in over three years, it’s safe to say that this album is jam-packed with plenty of tracks to showcase her versatility.

Soyeon has participated in a multitude of works as an idol, starting her journey on competition programs like Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar, and she’s well-known as the leader and main rapper of Cube Entertainment’s girl group (G)-IDLE. Soyeon also participated in SM Entertainment’s unit project Station Young for STATION X 0. Outside of idol life, she sings vocals for Akali from the League of Legends virtual groups K/DA and True Damage. In the time since her first solo tracks were released in 2017 and 2018, Soyeon has gained multiple brag-worthy titles to her name: singer-songwriter, rapper, producer, composer, and dancer.

The mini-album contains title track “BEAM BEAM” and B-sides “Weather,” “Quit,” “Psycho,” and “Is this bad b****** number?” with featured vocals from BIBI and Lee Youngji. The entire album has producer and writing credits from Korean producers Playtime and Kako

"BEAM BEAM"

“BEAM BEAM” is a bubblegum pop track with rock and hip-hop influence that sums up the adult life process. Lyrics, “I’m twenty-four, what I realized now is that, love is f*****,” and, “It’s hard to be friends with everyone in this burning city,” only confirm the difficulties and changes that occur as you become an adult. Soyeon's choice of lyrics gives an outspoken and rebellious view on life that according to Genius describe “when you grow up you know more, have a lot going on and have problems of course. It’s a progress of struggles, age, love and the acts of others.” Even in adulthood, there is still time to enjoy yourself. As she mentions in her post-chorus, “let’s beat this hot summer. Let’s dive into the swimming pool [...] Let’s ride a yellow skateboard.” She wants fans to still have a fun summer even if you still have adult responsibilities. This is the time to have fun!

In the music video, fans enter a fast food restaurant named Windy’s where Soyeon is disgruntled and bored while on the clock. As an adult, you may encounter a job that’s not worth your time, showing the same expressions as Soyeon. An interesting add-on to the visuals is the Instagram-style portrait of her while working. Though she breaks out of her monotonous expression by turning the restaurant into her stage and singing alongside hamburger characters, from disgruntled to feisty, she showcases a free-spirited side to her. In a separate scene, Soyeon is taking in the summer sun near a Windy’s food truck with her crew. There’s even a cameo feature with Lee Youngji where she has a dance battle against Soyeon for dropping her ice cream. With a 360 degree camera effect and CGI hamburger and ice cream characters, the music video gives off a hipster and alternative aesthetic. As the video comes to an end, Soyeon is sitting with a hamburger, where she takes a bite and brings it to the camera.

With an adventurous and bold title track to start off the album, Soyeon is certain to show more of her spunky personality with Windy. Make sure to check out the rest of her new album and check out the music video for “BEAM BEAM” below!
