All of Us Are Dead and Other Zombie Shows to Get Excited About

When the announcement of All of Us Are Dead was released, every zombie lover and watcher of K-Dramas rejoiced. The teaser gave us a small taste of what is sure to be a fantastic show, and now that Netflix has released the full-length trailer, it’s time to dive deeper into the show.

All of Us Are Dead is based on the webtoon, Now at Our School. The storyline isn’t new. A group of students gets trapped at school when someone gets bitten by an animal and becomes a zombie. Chaos ensues, and everyone left alive will have to survive until help arrives.

The upcoming drama’s cast will be familiar to many. Lee Yoomi, who played number 240 in Squid Game, will play Lee Nayeon. Jo Yihyun, who will play Choi Namra, starred in School 2021 as Jin Jiwon. Seasoned actor Byung Chul, who has starred in popular dramas like Sisyphus: The Myth, Doctor Prisoner, and Sky Castle, will play Lee Byungchan.

All of Us Are Dead will air on Netflix beginning January 28, but if you want to get a jump on watching zombie action now, here are some films and dramas that can tide you over until the end of the month.

Train to Busan

At the risk of repeating ourselves for the umpteenth time, Train to Busan is THE BEST ZOMBIE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. It has everything a zombie lover could want. Action, love interest, a protagonist to root for, and someone to loathe. Oh, and of course, the fastest zombies imaginable. Gong Yoo played the heck out of his role as Seo Sukwoo, a distracted father and businessman. Viewers go from being annoyed with his choices to applauding his every move. This movie is a tearjerker, so if you haven’t seen it before, be sure to grab some tissues before starting. Train to Busan is available on various streaming apps, including Viki and Amazon Prime Video.

Seoul Station

Seoul Station is Train to Busan’s prequel and a well-written one. In this animated movie, we follow Hyesun, a young woman who has fallen on hard times. She is stuck near Seoul Station after a fight with her boyfriend. While trying to figure out what to do, zombies begin running out of the subway station. Hyesun and a few others seek refuge in a police station, but things go from bad to worse. You can watch Seoul Station on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu.

Peninsula

Peninsula wasn’t the sequel to Train to Busan that everyone wanted, but that doesn’t make it a terrible movie. It takes place four years after the original film. Jungseok (Gang Dongwon) is a former soldier who lost his family while escaping South Korea during the zombie outbreak. He’s sent back to Seoul to retrieve a truck that has millions of won. Unfortunately, the retrieval won’t be easy because the area is now inhabited by zombies and gangs that survived the outbreak. Jungseok and his team find the truck, but are quickly taken out by a gang that has found a way to thrive in the wasteland. Peninsula is available on Viki, but be prepared to pay a rental fee.

#Alive

Watch this if you feel like screaming at the TV screen for two hours. Seriously. The main character, played by Yoo Ahin, makes so many rookie mistakes in this zombie movie it makes you want to rip your hair out. That aside, if you’re into strong female leads, this is the movie for you. Park Shinhye’s character is such a badass that you’ll find yourself rewinding her scenes to watch her defeat these unusually smart zombies time and time again. Netflix seems to be cornering the market on Korean zombie shows because this, too, is available on the platform.

Dark Hole

A mysterious mist surrounds a town and turns those who breathe it into a type of mutant that wants to destroy everyone it sees. Lee Hwasun (Kim Okbin) is a police detective dealing with the murder of her husband. While searching for the killer in a small town, Hwasun notices people are acting strangely. Suddenly all hell breaks loose, and she finds herself trapped with other residents, fighting off mutants who are being controlled by something that lives inside a hole in the middle of the woods. Finally, she gets help from tow truck operator Yoo Taehan (Lee Joonhyuk). Together they risk their lives to save the people who need it while also trying to get to the bottom of what’s inside the hole. Dark Hole is available to watch on Viki.

Sweet Home

Cha Hyunsoo (Song Kang) is an orphan and moves into a shoddy apartment complex to save money. One day, he gets a box of food he ordered and discovers that someone, or something, has eaten it. Hyunsoo follows the trail of food to his neighbor’s place and sees a monster doing something that you just have to see with your own eyes to believe. After escaping, Hyunsoo teams up with his neighbors and fights monsters to keep everyone safe. Although Sweet Home doesn’t have traditional zombies, the monsters are scary enough, and some try to eat you. The show is definitely worth the watch. It’s available on Netflix.

Happiness

Detective Yoon Saebom (Han Hyojoo) is excited to move into a new place with her friend and colleague Jung Yihyun (Park Hyungsik). However, not long after they get settled, an infectious disease affects their neighbors and turns them into zombies. The government puts the building in quarantine, and everyone begins to turn on each other as they fight over supplies. Saebom and Yihyun have to keep their neighbors calm while trying to find out where the disease started from, all while dodging mindless beings trying to eat them. Happiness is currently available on Viki.

Kingdom

Zombies during the Joseon era are something you never thought you’d need, but you do. Joo Jihoon plays Lee Chang, a prince his father’s Chief State Councilor has exiled. When he hears his father has passed away due to smallpox, he returns to take his rightful place as the new king. While at the palace, he hears rumors that people who died are returning to life. As he sets off to get to the bottom of that mystery, his father’s wife conspires to keep him away permanently. This historical thriller is available on Netflix.
