Dreamcatcher’s “VISION” Into the Apocalypse
Dreamcatcher has finally returned with the next installment of their Apocalypse series, [Apocalypse : Follow Us] following the release of [Apocalypse : Save Us] back in April. First, they wanted to be saved, but now they want to be followed, leading their listeners on a journey through mystery with tracks “Intro : Chaotical X,” “VISION,” “Fairytale,” “Some Love,” “Rainy Day,” and “Outro : Mother Nature.” This mini-album offers some of the rock vibes that Dreamcatcher have become known and appreciated for among their fans, InSomnia, while also taking on new and more melodic sounds that some might be unfamiliar with.
Title track “VISION” carries a nostalgic rock, nu-metal vibe with elements of techno mixed within the instrumentation that vocalist Yoohyeon says, “creates a sound even more majestic than before.” Its message and theme is a continuation of the story Dreamcatcher told through “MAISON,” the title track of [Apocalypse : Save Us] that earned the girls their first ever No. 1 on Show Champion. While “MAISON” warned about the horrors and effects of climate change and environmental damage, “VISION” takes place after the world has entered this dystopian, apocalyptic crisis and speaks about how Dreamcatcher wish to resolve the damage, taking on politician personas to urge people to look after the planet, with lyrics written by LEEZ, Ollounder, maddox, and June One of Glen Check.
The music video for “VISION” shows Dreamcatcher in the post-apocalyptic world, with their environments destroyed and collapsing around them. While their surroundings are a mess, the Dreamcatcher members stand out among the rubble, looking incredible while dressed in the likes of red military and black combat-style outfits. We also get to see them take on an impressive group dance choreography and stunning solo shots of each member in different apocalyptic environments.
Vocally, the Dreamcatcher girls deliver excellency in “VISION,” as they do with all of their music, providing a nice contrast and balance between soft and aggressive vocal tones. While “VISION” is more on the hard rock, techno side, “Fairytale” takes on a more soft, dream-like rock instrumentation. “Some Love” delivers an upbeat, nostalgic pop-rock vibe while “Rainy Day” expresses a soft, mellow ballad with beautiful vocals that really is the perfect sound for a rainy day. “Intro : Chaotical X” opens the mini-album, setting us up for the mystery and unpredictableness of the album with its EDM infused sound, while “Outro : Mother Nature” beautifully brings it to an end with an instrumentation that carries a sound signifying hope and new beginnings.
With [Apocalypse : Follow Us], Dreamcatcher have continued to show their talents as a fierce girl group of the pop-rock side of the K-Pop industry. With songs of different styles expressed through this mini-album, Dreamcatcher have proven that they can and will take on any style and deliver strong and powerful performances each time.
