Throwback Thursday: October Babies

Not a month goes by without a notable comeback or debut to look forward to, or in this case, to look back on fondly. October is no exception! This week, we’ll highlight some truly memorable October releases from over the years that celebrate anniversaries this month, and give them another well-deserved listen.

“4 Walls” - f(x)

Released on October 27, 2015, f(x) returned with their first album since Red Light as a quartet. 4 Walls and its titular song marked a new era for the group that would leave a lasting impression on the industry, as it would be their final proper comeback and album release to date. “4 Walls” was actually a reset, presenting a fresh new direction and style, visually and musically.

The critically-acclaimed, deep house track was accompanied by a beautiful and surreal music video and a handful of live performances with some incredible styling choices. The elegant and chic combination of high-waist pants, silk shirts, and fitted tops created a cohesive silhouette that flowed seamlessly with the choreography.

This track turns seven this month!

“Regular” - NCT 127

In both its Korean and English iterations, nobody can forget this track due to the sheer spectacle this release was for the group. NCT 127 is “neo” in everything they do, meaning each comeback is a chance to experiment and approach new, uncharted territory. This comeback would also be the only NCT 127 release, aside from NCT #127 Regulate, the repackage of NCT #127 Regular-Irregular, that would feature a 10-member lineup. If the NCTZens in the comments of this video are anything to go by, this track and video were innovative and ahead of their time. So let’s absolutely listen again!

“Regular” turned four this month.

“LOVE BOMB” - fromis_9

Another track turning four this month is the explosive and cute single from fromis_9, “LOVE BOMB.” Although the group would go on to win with their subsequent releases, we can’t help but wish this song had gotten more acclaim at the time of its release. With its clever use of the ticking sound of a time bomb, this track leans heavily into its metaphor of holding onto a secret affection until it just explodes—like a bomb!

The video is fun, with its playful and comedic scenes interspersed with cute pop-art-inspired backdrops and close-ups. While also remaining unique, it feels reminiscent of K-Pop videos of the early 2010s.

“Everybody” - SHINee

SHINee’s fifth mini-album Everybody and its title track turn nine years old this month! This track marked SHINee’s foray into the EDM sound with its consistent electronic elements, of course, accented by the unique flair specific to the group. The album doesn’t just stop with EDM but features R&B stylings, as well as the staple ballad meant to highlight the remarkable vocal talent of the five. The choreography is equally as outstanding as this track, with several point dances (i.e, the “wind-up” toys, the pied piper move, and the motor plane) that we could never forget.

Happy anniversary, “Everybody!”

“Every night” - EXID

With EXID making their long-awaited return to the scene, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of “Every night,” released in 2012. Since their debut, EXID has evolved substantially, yet this track has remained consistent with an element that is uniquely them. Whether it be their sensual and mature qualities, unconventional and bold videos, or impressive vocals, “Every night” possesses it all.

Welcome back, EXID, and happy birthday, “Every Night.”

“WONDERLAND” - ATEEZ

ATEEZ and ATINY alike have a lot to celebrate this month, with their debut anniversary taking place on October 24. We couldn’t possibly celebrate October releases without mentioning them! At the time of writing, “WONDERLAND” is one of ATEEZ’s most viewed music videos—a strong testament to the impact of this impressive track. As the final installment to the TREASURE saga, there’s not a title track more fitting for a strong farewell to an era.

This track is powerful throughout, only offering reprieve in the build-up to the chorus that is paired with an effortlessly cool moment where the members prepare for the main dance.

“Blue Hour” - TXT (Tomorrow x Together)

No one, MOA and average K-Pop enjoyer alike, is forgetting about the light-hearted groove of “Blue Hour” by TXT (Tomorrow x Together). This track will only turn two this year, but this memorable era deserves a replay. From the creative, colorful styling of the members (Soobin and Yeonjun’s blue and pink hair!), to the fever dream of a music video, there’s something for everyone.

The funky cowboy hat dance break featured in live performances is unforgettable, letting the fun of this track carry on for a few extra moments. The energy from the members here is infectious.

Happy two years, “Blue Hour!”
