TXT B-Sides: Chapter 2
This week I’m back with part two of the best B-Side tracks from fourth-gen stars, TXT (Tomorrow x Together). If you missed part one, you can read all about The Dream Chapter here. Today we’ll dive into The Chaos Chapter and accompanying minisodes to see how TXT have matured since their debut in 2019.
“Ghosting” - minisode1: Blue Hour
Despite Blue Hour’s colorful exterior and bright title track, the first minisode is actually the start of the “breakup period” detailed throughout The Chaos Chapter. TXT bless listeners with one last cute concept before their universe becomes clouded in angst and darkness. The opening track, “Ghosting,” creates a dreamlike soundscape with a blend of indie rock and ‘80s flare. The Nu Gaze genre perfectly complements TXT’s hypnotic harmonies and floaty falsetto as they sing about the 21st Century ghosting phenomenon. You can check out a vibrant performance of “Ghosting” below, but don’t disappear after one listen — the rest of minisode1: Blue Hour is equally special.
“What If I Had Been That PUMA” - The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE
For this next B-Side, we officially enter The Chaos Chapter. TXT released their second full-length album on May 31, 2021, over a year after the final installation of The Dream Chapter. FREEZE teases TXT’s dark side while simultaneously sticking to their roots by adding some bright pop songs to the mix. “What If I Had Been That PUMA” is an excellent example, as the groovy dance-pop track takes on a robotic edge with the addition of synthesizers and stylistic autotune. It melds to create an interesting track about finding yourself at a crossroads and not knowing which path to follow. The Korean title, “Balance Game,” might be a better description as the lyrics relate to the popular game in Korea which combines “This or That” and “Would You Rather” to create a fun icebreaker for getting to know someone better. TXT performed the track for the very first time during their 2022 ACT: LOVE SICK tour, making it so there is now at least one live performance of every song in their discography.
“MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” - The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE
Shortly after the release of their second album, TXT made a comeback with their first repackaged album, The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE. With three additional tracks, TXT poses one final balance game for listeners: FIGHT back against the dark realities of the world or choose love and ESCAPE together. “MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” is the eighth track from the album and TXT’s first official fan song. All five members of the group are credited as writers, with Taehyun being acknowledged as one of the biggest contributors. When asked about the song by 1st Look magazine, he shared, “It’s a song we made thinking that we want to be with MOA [TXT’s fans] from the first moment we met until now and for a long time in the future as well. The members all poured their hearts into writing the lyrics. The things we wanted to say were endless, and we had a hard time talking them out. We packed it in tight with some of our hand-picked feelings for MOA.” Choose love and escape into the TXT universe with this charming performance of “MOA Diary.”
“Opening Sequence” - minisode 2: Thursday’s Child
TXT’s fourth mini-album, minisode 2: Thursday’s Child, forms a bridge between The Chaos Chapter and The Name Chapter. The group teased their upcoming third chapter during an outstanding performance at this year’s Melon Music Awards. Thursday’s Child is sure to be on repeat as fans anxiously await TXT’s January comeback. The mini-album opens with arguably one of the best releases from a boy group in 2022. The lyrics detail a disastrous breakup in which the memories replay on repeat like the opening sequence of a movie. The alternative R&B track is beautifully painful as it shows off TXT’s vocal precision and conceptual range. The choreography and raw vocals only add to the song’s beauty as TXT captivates their audience with each new live performance. See TXT shine in the original rendition of “Opening Sequence” from their comeback show.
That wraps up part two of TXT’s best B-Side tracks! If you enjoyed these songs, be sure to stay tuned for their January comeback as the group prepares to enter The Name Chapter.
