VERIVERY Confronts the Necessity of Darkness in “Undercover”

After speaking with us about their latest single SERIES 'O' [ROUND 0 : WHO] and sharing their desire to try out the hip-hop genre, VERIVERY has done it! With the release of their first full album SERIES 'O' [ROUND 3 : WHOLE] and the title track “Undercover,” VERIVERY explores a new sound along with how to coexist with your own darkness.

As mentioned in the intro, the new title song is a hip-hop track at its core, and the addicting beat kicks off from the first note. There is a vocal sample used at the beginning of the track that sounds like it is of gospel origins, but it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, even after listening to it a number of times. The driving beat is what makes this track addictive without a doubt, and while there is a tinge of the ever-popular noise music feature, in general, it remains subtle enough to not be overbearing. Some of the vocal lines are so rapid they almost sound like rap verses, which definitely feels very different from what VERIVERY has released in the past. If you like the general harder sound from boy groups, “Undercover” will be right up your alley.

The music video definitely aims at cinematic intensity, opening up with a large building (from a previous music video) crumbling to dust as the boys jump through a portal into a parallel universe. There are plenty of callbacks to previous videos in SERIES ‘O,’ which help to tie the lore together. There’s a futuristic twist to the scenery, but in terms of fashion, there is a mix of simplicity and hip-hop influences. As we’ve come to expect of VERIVERY, there are very sharp and synchronized choreography points that drive home the parallel universe theme. The video does a great job of showcasing a more mature vibe from the sophomore group.
