Belated Birthday B-Sides

Everyone, everywhere, shares a birthday with someone, and it’s always fun to Google which celebrities may be your birthday twin; sometimes you are familiar with them and, other times, you have no clue who they are. My discoveries were mostly the latter, until I discovered K-Pop and found out that I share a birthday with K-Pop idols HyunA, Haechan (NCT), and Son Dongwoon (Highlight). We were all born on June 6, and celebrated our most recent birthdays exactly one week ago today! So, in honor of this, let’s belatedly celebrate these idols' birthdays by looking at some of their B-side tracks.

“Good Person” - Haechan

Earlier this year, NCT member Haechan surprised fans with his first-ever solo music project, an OST track for web-drama Ply Friends: Soyeon University Class of ‘22. While the majority of the music that NCT and all of their sub-units tend to be associated with is upbeat, energetic, and full of swag, “Good Person” is the total opposite to this. It is a sweet, slow song with major coffeeshop vibes that happens to be a cover of Yoo Heeyeol’s one-man project band Toy’s 2001 song of the same name. The song is cute and Haechan’s vocals are so soft and calming; this song is a nice surprise for anyone coming from NCT’s upbeat discography.

“DART” - HyunA

“DART” is B-Side track off of HyunA’s 2017 EP Following, a song that balances HyunA’s soft singing vocals against a tropical-esque instrumentation. It’s a side of HyunA that casual listeners might not be so familiar with, as it’s not as energetic and upbeat as some of her other songs; it’s more on the chill, laidback side that is perfect for a summer night setting. Although “DART” may be different to HyunA’s other tracks that she is more known for, it still carries that classic HyunA sound that everyone loves, as she provides a small rap section in the second verse that fits the song's vibe perfectly.

“Still, Today” - Dongwoon

“Still, Today” is the second track from Highlight maknae Dongwoon’s first digital single release, Prelude: Voice. It is a peaceful track that beautifully highlights (no pun intended) Dongwoon’s sweet vocals over a soft piano and a faint acoustic guitar and drum instrumentation. His high notes in the chorus sung against the backdrop of the piano complement each other perfectly. Overall, it’s a really nice, gentle song to listen to that is the perfect sound for a coffee shop setting.
