Best of June B-sides

June has been another month filled with lots of K-Pop comebacks, and with one week left to go, there are still so many more new releases to look forward to. But for now, here’s a look at just some of my favorite B-side tracks released so far this month.

“Whip!” - KARD

“Whip!” is such a nice, feel-good summer B-side track from KARD’s fifth mini-album, Re:, that carries quite a heavy nostalgic feel to me. Its vibe and composition are quite reminiscent of pop and R&B songs of the early noughties, especially in the chorus. I personally love the repetition of the words in the chorus like, “straight to the whip! Whip! Whip! Whip! Whip!” It's so addictive and catchy that you’ll be singing along to “Whip!” straight from the get-go. This album has honestly been one of my favorite releases of 2022 so far, and every K-Pop fan needs to listen to it — all the B-sides and the title track deserve great hype. Don't wait, go listen to Re: today!

“Deja vu” - PIXY

I had never heard a PIXY song until listening to their latest album REBORN, and I am so pleasantly surprised with what I’ve heard. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t the vibes that I heard in all of the tracks on this album. From this album alone, PIXY seems to have a powerful edge to their music that sets them apart from the cute pop sounds that we hear from other girl groups in K-Pop (not to say that type of music is bad, I enjoy those sounds too!). From REBORN, “Deja vu” is my favorite B-side; it’s a really cool track that fuses pop, rock, and EDM together to create this deep and haunting, yet energetic, sound. I particularly love the drawn-out singing on the word “vu” in the chorus, and the deep vocal sound effect and drumbeat you can hear behind it.

“AIRPLANE” - OMEGA X

Taken from OMEGA X’s first full-length album release, Story Written in Music, “AIRPLANE” is a major summer bop with its hip-hop-infused pop beat and great rap and singing vocals from the members. It’s such a fun, catchy song to nod your head to. I’m obsessed with the chorus, there’s just something about the way Yechan sings, “baby we gon’ fly high to the sky,” and, “I’ll make you happy ‘til I die,” against the electronic beat. It’s a refreshing sound, and it’s hard to explain why I like it so much, but once you listen to it, hopefully you will agree. It’s addictive and hooks you into the song from the very beginning, as OMEGA X made the great decision to open “AIRPLANE” with this fun chorus.
