Celebrate Summer With DAY6 (Even of Day)

DAY6 (Even of Day) served up fans a summer treat with their new release, “해변의 달링,” or “Darling on the Beach.” The song marks the two-year anniversary of the DAY6 sub-unit and serves as a gift for their listeners while members Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon carry out their military enlistments.

While their prior singles took a more somber approach, “해변의 달링” is a feel-good track with brassy synths, playful repetition, and a kick of summer nostalgia (think DAY6’s “I’m Serious”). On top of sounding like some of DAY6’s earlier work, the song brings the Even of Day touch as Young K and Wonpil effortlessly harmonize with each other. A token line from Dowoon is, of course, the cherry on top of this summer sundae.

Most K-Pop songs are made all the better by their music videos, but the video for “해변의 달링” is what makes the song the gem that it is. The video sees Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon soaking up the summer sun on a tropical island until a mysterious woman catches their eye; then it’s an all-out battle for her affections. Hilarity ensues as each member tries to take the others down, like when Young K and Wonpil play a violent game of chicken, or when Dowoon shoots them both in the neck with poison darts. “변의 달링” sounds even brighter when paired with blinding neon colors, anime-style glittering effects, and kitschy tropical shirts. And it’s more than enough to warm any My Day’s heart while the boys are away.
