Indie Introductions: Lacuna
We all know the K-Pop scene is sorely lacking in bands in particular, so if you’re needing both an indie and band fix, look no further. Lacuna is a four-member band that debuted in 2018 and is currently under the indie label Happy Robot Record. The group has released four EPs and two digital singles, including a new EP Summer Tales back in February and the single “I Love You” earlier this month.
The group debuted in December 2018 fully independently with the four-track EP Incompleteness Dream. Track “Montauk” includes an accompanying music video, which complements the soft and dreamy feel of the melody. Many of the bands we see tend to go for a harder rock sound, but this track has a very gentle and almost melancholy feel. The video showcases the band in an outdoor setting in the fall, when the grass is no longer green and the trees in the woods are brown and bare. Despite being a softer song, the electric guitar line does still have quite a kick to it, and often takes the main stage even over the vocals.
Currently, the group’s most popular song at over 800,000 streams on Spotify is the track “Dancing in the rain.” This track definitely has a more classic rock feel, particularly in the chorus when the guitar amps up in intensity. The song starts off very simple and soft with the vocals supported by an acoustic guitar line before the big crescendo at the chorus. The video showcases a sweet and passionate love story, and along with the stellar electric guitar lines, this makes for a popular track.
For their latest comeback, single “I Love You” brings back the prominent electric guitar and buildup to an intense chorus, a formula that has clearly worked in the past. Kyungmin’s vocals definitely have a dreamlike quality to them that many find particularly enticing. The song has a similar feel to “Dancing in the rain,” so it’s safe to say if you enjoyed that track, you will enjoy this comeback as well.
