“LIMBO” and The Year of JUN

JUN of SEVENTEEN has always been an ethereal presence on the stage. As one of the members of SEVENTEEN’s prestigious performance unit, he’s been setting the bar for onstage charisma since 2015. In terms of solo work, he’s released multiple Chinese singles, all of which, while stunning, have stayed in the realm of ballads. But something in the universe has shifted in 2022, with JUN going from a beautiful singer and dancer to a downright force to be reckoned with, and one needs to look no further than his latest tantalizing release “LIMBO” as proof.

It’s hard to put into words what separates JUN from his incredibly talented bandmates, but there’s something otherworldly in the way he moves and performs; that being said, he’s always remained humble in his talents, putting the group before himself. Somewhere circa the releases of Face the Sun and SECTOR 17, however, JUN’s confidence as a performer seemed to skyrocket to the point where it was hard to take your eyes off of him in the albums’ respective music videos. This only heightened with the start of SEVENTEEN’s Be The Sun tour, with JUN being the standout member at nearly every stop thus far. With a new shock of blond hair to match his attitude, he’s left a path of destruction in his wake—especially when he donned a ponytail for the Toronto stop of the group’s tour.

“LIMBO” feels like the most natural step after JUN has bias-wrecked the entirety of Caratland. The sultry electro-pop single sees JUN sink his fangs into his new sexy image, adopting a vampire-esque role for the music video. Clad in latex and smokey eyeliner as he dances with a troupe of female dancers, he delivers a performance so captivating that I found myself holding my breath until the end of the video. The vocals are nothing to scoff at, either: in SEVENTEEN, he tends to use his upper register, but “LIMBO” lets JUN explore his entire vocal color. And any fan of the singer will understand when I say that his husky lower register is one of SEVENTEEN’s secret weapons. As if this all wasn’t enough, JUN also helped write and compose the track.

“LIMBO” is not the arrival or reinvention of JUN, but it is another side that fans have been eagerly waiting to see. And it’s one that will certainly bring in a new wave of JUN appreciators. All things considered, I want to be clear: this spark was always there. If anything, it feels like someone simply lit a match to start this uncontrollable fire that will surely leave all of us hanging in JUN’s “LIMBO” for quite some time. If this release is anything to go by, it’s a supreme understatement to say we look forward to JUN showing more sides of his versatile talents in the future.
