Throwback Thursday: I Saw an “Angel”

“Be not afraid” of this week's angelic theme. We’ll look at a handful of angel-inspired K-Pop songs, whether it be in the title or through its lyrics.

“Angel” - NCT 127

NCT 127’s second mini-album, NCT#127 LIMITLESS, at first glance, feels sharp and powerful in its concept as well as with its title track. However, there is space for soft and poignant ballads like “Back 2 U (AM 01:27),” and “Angel.” From which this week's article's title is derived, “Angel” has syrupy-sweet lyrics to boot, describing the incredible experience of what could only be love at first sight.

“Angel or Devil ” - TXT

Despite the heart-wrenching title track, “9 and Three Quarters (Run Away),” The Dream Chapter: MAGIC, was full of many fun B-sides like “Angel or Devil.”' The track is an example of TXT (Tomorrow x Together) at their brightest, with a playful sound throughout and fun, interactive choreography.

“Adore U” - SEVENTEEN

It’s not in the title, but many of us – non-K-Poppies as well – are familiar with the lyrics of “Adore U,” especially the line, “Baby, you are my angel!” SEVENTEEN’s 2015 debut was surprising in the best way for those of us that had been watching the reality show and patiently awaiting their arrival. This video had personality and charm, utilizing some of the popular trends of 2015 to accent.

“Heaven ”- EXO

It was the, “Hello, Angel,” heard across the world. EXO’s “Heaven” is a perfect use of the quintessential hip-hop and R&B sound, guided by the simplistic yet effective piano melody carried throughout. EX’ACT has an insane amount of amazing songs, featuring not only “Lucky One” and “Monster” but also many B-sides that are still well-known amid their extensive discography.

“1004 (Angel) ” - B.A.P

“1004 (Angel),” in Korean, is pronounced, “Cheonsa,” which shares the same pronunciation as “Angel” in the language. This homonym is the inspiration behind the title of B.A.P’s “1004 (Angel)” off their first full-length album, First Sensibility. Since “One Shot,” B.A.P had been putting out elaborate storylines in their videos. “1004 (Angel)” carries on that trend with multiple, eye-catching set changes that play out a different message for each. The song itself breaks away from previous releases, taking on a rock-influenced sound that had yet been explored in their title tracks.

“Heaven” - TAEMIN

We’ll wrap up this week's list with another session of “Missing TAEMIN hours.” TAEMIN’s “Heaven” is paradoxical, with suggestive and sensual lyrics despite its title being conventionally associated with the exact opposite. The live stage linked below, currently sitting at a generous one million views, plays into this dichotomy. TAEMIN alongside his backup dancers are clad from head to toe in black, against the gothic imagery and blood red flashing across the screens.
