Heejin Gets a Fresh Start in “Algorithm” Debut

Another former member of LOONA has made her solo debut! Heejin made her debut on October 31 with her first mini-album K and the title track “Algorithm.” It is the first solo project she has done since her predebut release “ViViD” in 2016 before LOONA was formed, and the first under her new company since leaving Blockberry Creative and becoming a member of ARTMS alongside former LOONA members Haseul, Jinsoul, Kim Lip, and Choerry.

“Algorithm” is the title track of Heejin’s mini-album and is a funky ‘80s inspired song! With synth instrumentals and a catchy electronic percussion, it isn’t hard to miss the sounds of the ‘80s throughout the song. Heejin sings of breakups and compares social media algorithms to the recurring thoughts she has and wanting to start fresh. At first in the music video, she is shown in traditional Korean clothing almost as if she were a princess, and eventually changes into more casual wear as she moves on and goes about her life with newfound freedom. The social media comparisons are also shown numerous times, even featuring her watching the music video for “Air Force One” by ODD EYE CIRCLE, who are also her groupmates in ARTMS.

The other girls of ARTMS actually make appearances throughout the music video as well. The girls of ODD EYE CIRCLE join Heejin walking down the streets of Seoul, and Haseul later approaches Heejin to hand her a bottle of water at a dance class while encouraging her she can do it. Older choreography is also teased in “Algorithm,” as Heejin references her dance in “ViViD,” which ties into LOONA even more.

K contains 6 songs including “Kehwa,” “Sad Girls Club,” “Video Game,” “Nokia,” and “Addiction” alongside the title track.
