Enter the “ABYSS” with WOODZ

WOODZ is back with his newest single “ABYSS,” his first release since joining EDAM Entertainment last fall. The introspective track serves as a pre-release single for his upcoming mini-album to be released at a later date.

Written and composed by the singer, “ABYSS” shows WOODZ at his most vulnerable yet. The soft pop song is a stark contrast to the majority of his title tracks released thus far, indicating that this is a time of a transition for the singer. Guitars and muted drums lead the backtrack as WOODZ softly croons about baring yourself to someone, flaws and all. Though it’s not a song that’s likely to end up as a staple of WOODZ’s career, it’s a touching release that’s sure to resonate with fans old and new.

Similarly, the tone for “ABYSS” is set when the music video opens with a title screen proclaiming the work is, “A very personal story by WOODZ.” He’s shown entering an old mansion where he then ends up in a room surrounded by worn books. In this room, a colorful cast of characters come and go, leaving crystal balls for WOODZ. In exchange, WOODZ gives each visitor a parcel, though it’s unclear what lies inside at the start.

As the video progresses, WOODZ is shown wandering the estate by his lonesome, though seemingly content with—or maybe resigned to—his circumstances. The video then cuts to the other characters doing the same thing. Viewers are finally granted some clarity when the final moments of the video show characters extracting the crystal balls from their hearts—given the lyrics, this is potentially a metaphor for the fan-to-artist relationship. In this context, it is indeed quite the intimate portrayal of what it means to be a singer, the way that singers establish deeply personal connections with others through their music, and how these relationships can be as constrictive as they are wholesome.

If “ABYSS” is anything to go by, we look forward to the new chapter WOODZ is starting with EDAM. It looks like the artist is going to flourish beautifully in the months to come.
