Take a Subway Into the Future With Eric Nam

Eric Nam is back with the single "Only for a Moment", a month after "Don't Leave Yet". The title track on his newest album, House on a Hill, is the perfect mix of R&B and soul. You can relax during your studies, or listen to it on your own subway journey, and never get bored of Eric's calming vocals or the feeling of hope in these very literal lyrics. Released September 8, 2023, this dreamy track was composed by James Hatcher, Andrew Clutterbuck, and Eric Nam himself. While it took a team of romantic, yet cynical, musicians to write this story, it only takes two to fall in love.

On this subway journey, a beautiful lady awaits her destination in a lonely cart. That is until a matrix-styled Eric Nam unknowingly sits across from her. Removing his shades, they finally set eyes on each other and saw their lives flash before their eyes.

This is where things get kind of strange. If you were expecting a slow dance at their wedding followed by adorable children playing at the park, you are completely mistaken. This subway has officially lost its path to the sweet part of their future, derailing from all the fun 'memories'.

Instead, Eric is left to battle his future as he sees many recurring problems. Unable to run from them, he walks across the cart and investigates each scenario. Shall we do the same? No, you're in the next cart taking a break from your own future? Okay, we'll speed-run it!

Just when you thought life couldn't get any crazier, we're introduced to a wild future about the couple's children. Whether it's bad parenting or an unruly personality, Eric's kids don't seem to be the brightest of the bunch.

As his son loses all his teeth (and actually looks proud), he offers them to his father who is reluctant to accept the bloody gift. The boy ages into a shy teenager who is often bullied while just trying to quietly read. In fact, he focused so much on his grades that his life was all stress and he had no time for friends.

However, his daughter is the complete opposite of her sibling. A wild, rebellious child, the world is her oyster and she chooses to live with no regrets. We next see his daughter grow into a young adult with a bad-girl image as she ‘innocently’ kisses her equally grungy partner. Horrified, Eric refuses eye contact and lets her continue her rebellion. There is much to ponder as the singer's future becomes increasingly grim. Could there ever be a happily ever after?

Eventually, Eric decides to stop this Groundhog Day-like dream to change, or at least improve these drastic events. First, he helps his toothless son and gives his daughter the easy-going, adventurous childhood she deserves to teach her the value of love and respecting oneself. But where is his wife in all of this?

Perhaps she doesn't see the same future as Eric, or any future at all. As the subway comes to a halt, she walks away from her destiny, but the singer is quick to follow. We'll never know if he asked her out and they created the future we saw… We'll never know if their story turns out different, or if she rejected him the moment he tried to speak. But what we do know is subway journeys are short and their doors shut within a minute. Don't hesitate to grasp that future because the next stop could hold something entirely different.
